Multiple Patterns in Bedroom

An Eclectic Bedroom With Blue Walls and Mix and Matched Patterns

Complete your small space by mixing patterns. In this bedroom, Ikat print curtains pair well with a tribal influenced mirror that hangs above the bed. Use throw pillows to your advantage, and add visual interest by mixing similarly colored pillows that have interesting patterns. The chevron pillows here are set off by a nostalgic, knitted throw in the middle. Unify the space by matching a muted blue wall color with quilted bed linens to add texture, but keep the pops of color from overpowering the room.

Designer Mary Jo Fiorella recruited family members to help her with the budget-friendly redesign of her Castro Valley, Calif., master bedroom.

We caught up with Mary Jo to see how she transformed the bedroom into a serene spot for only $2,000.

Describe your wish list.

My wish list included a new paint color, draperies, bed and bedding. I wanted a space that was comfortable, cozy and would make me feel happy.

What was your biggest obstacle in this space?

Physically getting it done with my lack of time. Over the holiday break, I put my family, who had come in from all over the country, to work. My dad painted the room, and my brothers hung the drapery rods and curtains.

How does the end result match up with your original vision?

It went pretty much as planned. At first, I wasn't sure I liked the wall paint color, but I let it sit with me and now I love it.

What lessons did you learn?

Take some risks. Go with a richer color. Try a patterned drapery. Buy something pink for at least one room. As an accent, it isn't going to emasculate anyone; it really makes you happy.

What are the "hidden gems"?

I love the table lamps, which are from Arteriors, and the throw pillows featuring fabrics from Romo and Schumacher.
