What to Grow in Alkaline Soil

Alkaline soils have a pH of over 7. Incorporate plenty of organic matter and these flowering plants will thrive, but don’t overfertilize — this results in tall, floppy plants.

Clematis Vine

Clematis, Huldine, is an excellent reblooming clematis with creamy white flowers with yellow anthers and three pinkish mauve central bars on the underside of each of the petals. It is a very vigorous grower.

Purple Crocus

Crocus tommasinianus, Ruby Giant, is a cultivar that features star shaped, deep violet purple flowers with yellow orange anthers. It typically blooms in late winter to early spring. Flowers close at night and open up in the morning.

Photinia Berries

Photinia davidiana is a broadleaf evergreen shrub with glossy lance shaped leaves that look good throughout the season. In spring, masses of white flowers are borne on new growth, followed by brilliant ruby red berry clusters.

Worcester Gold

Caryopteris x clandonensis, Worcester Gold, is a low mounded, deciduous shrub that is valued for its aromatic foliage and late summer flowers which are said to resemble clouds of blue smoke or mist. Flowers are attractive to butterflies.

Crab Apple Blossom

The regal Lemoine purple crabapple covers itself in mid spring with a profusion of buds and violet pink flowers that later form small dark purple red fruits. This deciduous ornamental flowering tree has an open branched round topped canopy.

Alkaline Lover

Hebe, Great Orme, is a somewhat open, evergreen, bushy shrub, which can grow to nearly 5 feet. The parallel sided, spear shaped, shiny, green leaves are followed by flowers that are bright pink, summer to autumn.

Purple Campanula

Campanula, Superba, are vibrant purple blue upward facing flowers that appear in dense clusters creating a doubled look making it a very nice cut flower. Blooming begins in late June and continues through August. It is a vigorous grower.

Golden Forsythia

Forsythia is a deciduous shrub with golden yellow flowers in early to mid-spring, before leaves appear.
