Digital Picture Frames Have Grown Up Into Wall Art

Get inspired to add a touch of artistic tech into your home with these innovative wall art ideas from HGTV Smart Home 2017.

Behind the Design : Digital Frames

Art can really make or break a home. Wall and room decor help communicate your personality and sense of style without having to say a word. So, when I was thinking of how to display art in the HGTV Smart Home 2017, i knew I needed something relatable and personal… but with a tech twist, of course! I found something that totally fit the bill. We’ve installed two digital canvases from Meural.com, incorporating them into a gallery wall by the kitchen. They look like framed photographs, but they have a matte screen that displays art, either from a collection of galleries you can choose from, or from your own photo collection. These aren’t the outdated digital picture frames you used to know… they’re an entirely new screen technology that you would mistake for flat art if you walked by quickly— they are large scale, beautifully framed, and blend in with the rest of your home’s art. The show-stopper feature has to be the gesture control. Once you’re done uploading the photos, you can wave your hand in front of them to scroll through the pictures, changing up the art at any time. Or you can wave your hand up to learn more about each piece, so you can expand your knowledge of art while you enjoy the art in your home. The display options are really endless. The best part is Meural frames allow your home to keep up with your family. If you have new photos from a recent family vacation, or your kids bring home yearbook photos, the Meural frames let you change things up and keep your displays fresh. You operate the whole thing from your device or from the web, installing and uninstalling photos and galleries wirelessly— make changes on the website or app, and the frame is instantly updated. If you can’t make the move to digital displays quite yet, there are other ways to use your smartphone to display beautiful images: Artifact Uprising creates beautiful photo books and displays using snaps from your smartphone. The company was founded by professional photographers, so you know you can rely on the quality of the images. Want to show off your Instagram feed? Projecteo will keep you and your family entertained for hours. This mini (and I mean mini) projector can display all of your photos wherever you choose. Pikazo is another favorite, an app that lets you transform any photograph into a masterful work of art. Simply choose a photo, apply a Pikazo style, and see an ordinary photo come to life on your screen. Like the idea of these digital canvases? Would you install one in your home? Let me know in the comments!
