Warm, Relaxing Family Room

Glen and Carolyn choose orange for the wall color and compromise on a warm, dark shade. Darker colors are cozy and intimate, which is appropriate for a family room. To accentuate the fireplace, the narrow wall is covered with golden brown, pretzel-colored, stacked-stone slabs that have a lot of color variations, including orange tones. A multi-hued brown carpeting with charcoal gray border reinforces the colors of the stonework.

Because the room is so large and sound tends to echo, custom-built sound baffles are hung on two of the walls to absorb sound from the TV. They are made of plywood squares, topped with foam and cotton batting, and covered with orange cotton fabric. Heavy theater-style drapes in a darker shade of orange are also hung. The couple chooses chocolate brown for the upholstered chair to blend with their saddle brown sectional sofa. And the vintage red movie seats complete the home theater decor.
