Light and bright were the two terms designer Kerrie Kelley kept in mind while designing this transitional living and dining space. By mixing traditional patterns and furniture with hints of tropical designs and bright colors, Kelley was able to create a beautiful modern space.

What were the main items on the family’s wish list?

Create a light, bright, happy space for these active adult homeowners to enjoy. They moved from Hawaii so it was a dramatic shift to move to California.

What was the single largest challenge you wanted to address for this client?

We needed to maintain the terra cotta colored floor tile due to expense, so we needed to find a way via wall color, area rugs and furnishing to incorporate yet down play the distinct coloration.

What was your biggest obstacle in this space?

The homeowners had no transitional furniture while waiting for their custom pieces to be made—we rushed the pieces we specified to arrive as quickly as possible as they were living in camping chairs and sleeping on a couple of mattresses.

How does the end result match up with your original vision for the space?

We love the end result of this home. It is the perfect blend of new furnishings with the clients’ personal collection of items from their travels.

What surprised you the most about the project?

We tried to make this plan very open for “visitability” of friends and family. It allows all visitors to interact, eat, play games and enjoy the environment inside and out.

What are the hidden gems in your plan?

We have a wonderful piece of artwork that was commissioned for the homeowner over the fireplace. It ties together all the colors and reflects exactly what they love about California—color, vibrancy and the wine country.
