Incorporating Art Deco Design In a Spanish Style Home

While Phil and Crystal Weinstein love the architecture of their 1920s Spanish-style home, they're drawn more to Art Deco style than to Spanish decor. The Rate My Space design team blends the two styles in their living room by incorporating the home's dark wood and rustic architecture and adding layers of black and white geometric patterns and pops of color. Additionally, they turn a bland fireplace into a major focal point with a new mantle and colorful ceramic tile, while new leather chairs ground the room and look fantastic against creamy yellow walls.

Creating Classic Style and Cool Colors in a Man's Master Bedroom

Homeowner Michael Reisz wants a classic bedroom with clean lines and soothing colors, but he has an unusual design dilemma. Michael is color blind. When he posted his room on HGTV.com's Rate My Space, he got low marks for his color palette and unmatched accessories. Enter Angelo Surmelis and his design team who give Michael's bedroom cool blue tones, carpet tiles that add warmth and a new king size bed that gives the room a timeless and masculine feel. Additionally, they frame out the outdated mirrored closet doors to give them a contemporary look and bring in low bedside tables and a new dresser to finish the room.

Incorporating Modern Style in a Vintage Living Room

Scott Salinas and Lisa Reider are engaged to be married and just bought their first home together. Their front room has great coved ceilings and intricate details, but they don't know how to showcase these elements in such a small room. Angelo Surmelis and his design team get right to business creating a modern style with vintage elements. The team installs new French doors that bring in more light, and they paint the walls a cool blue with dark accents around the tray ceiling. Finally, a chic chandelier in the center of the room gives the whole space elegance and warmth.

Infusing Modern Style to a Craftsman-Style Family Room

Single mom Denise Jaxon was unhappy with her attempts to add sophistication to the family room of her craftsman-style home. The Rate My Space design team, led by Angelo Surmelis, starts her makeover by tearing out old baseboards and infusing a soothing color palette of blue-gray, mauve and white. Next, they install hand-crafted baseboards, much larger than what Denise had in the room previously, to help make a bold statement. Carpenter Jared Dostie builds a one-of-a-kind craftsman-style entry table with tapered legs for a sleeker feel. New tiles around the fireplace and modern low-slung seating finish the room in a style that's both cosmopolitan and craftsman.

Season 3, Episode 5

Bringing Modern Style to a Living Room That Doubles as a Playpen

Hollis and Rob La Plante have called on Angleo Surmelis and the Rate My Space community on HGTV.com for help. They want to love their mid-century lounge room that currently serves as both an entertainment space and a playpen for their son Hunter. However, Hollis would like to bring in more style, perhaps with a sleek new sofa, and she wants to make the disappearing white fireplace more of a focal point. Meanwhile, all Rob asks for is a comfortable chair in which to watch football. Angelo's challenge is to strike a balance between modern style and the functional needs of the La Plante family.

A Design Plan for a Media Room That Also Hosts a Couple's Artistic Pursuits

Cecilia Lee and Tim Maloney are both artists at heart. Their media room is currently used for their artistic pursuits, and they remodeled it themselves, including self-made media storage cabinets. However, seating is sparse, and organization is still a priority. Additionally, Cecilia uses one side of the room for arts and crafts and would love concealed storage bins to keep the space neat and clean. Host Angelo Surmelis brings in a clear design plan that gives Tim and Cecilia the multi-purpose room they'd always hoped for.

A Modern and Romantic Master Bedroom Retreat

Greg and Lena Kessman have made huge strides in remodeling their bungalow home to accommodate their family of four. After remodeling for necessity, they're now ready to pamper themselves with a modern and romantic master bedroom retreat. They want to take advantage of their 13-foot ceilings by adding a coffered ceiling, and they envision a unique headboard to accent their bed area and to cover up some of the blank wallspace. In addition, they are determined to incorporate a sitting area in the space. It's a tall order for a tall bedroom, but the Kessmans hope host Angelo Surmelis and the Rate My Space community will offer them some great suggestions.

A Dining Room's Potential is Realized in a Traditional Style Makeover

Amy and Al Pierce have hit a wall, actually four walls, when it comes to decorating the dining room in their Spanish style home. In an attempt to bring warmth to the space, they painted the walls a moss green, but now the dining room feels too small and dark. After searching HGTV.com's Rate My Space for ideas, they discovered that they differ on style: Al likes the room's simplicity and leans towards clean lines, while Amy wants a cozy place for family meals. They do agree that - with great architectural features like intricate floorboards, archways and windows with a great view - they have a room with a lot of potential. Now, Al and Amy have asked host Angelo Surmelis and his team to help them realize it.

Season 3, Episode 9

Traditional Style Living Room

Justin and Katy Cannon love their traditional roots and strong family ties. Even their current ranch style home was once owned by Justin's mother. However, in their living room, oversized furniture, a rock-walled fireplace and a gigantic television detract from the warm traditional look they want. They like the room's neutral wall colors and the huge sliding glass doors that provide a great view of the backyard, as well as their red area rug that gives the room a pop of color. Beyond that, they're ready to start from scratch to create a warm, comfortable and cohesive living room, and they've appealed to HGTV.com's Rate My Space community for suggestions.

Season 3, Episode 10

Many Styles to Choose From in a Great Room

Knocking down the adjacent wall in their galley kitchen was the Wises' best attempt to make a great room. However, Dana and Kerri hit another wall when it came to decorating and designing three spaces as one cohesive room. With feedback from HGTV.com's Rate My Space community, they're ready to start by creating a casual gathering area that balances their overstufffed furniture and their clean, contemporary kitchen. Additionally, Kerri would like to incorporate more contemporary elements throughout without losing comfort and practicality. Traditional, modern, contemporary, so much to choose from. Host Angelo Surmelis and his team are ready to guide them through.

Season 3, Episode 11

Making the Most of a Master Bedrooom's Potential

Michael Rice has fully embraced his wife Anita's Indian culture, as evidenced by glimpses of Indian decor and accessories throughout their home. However, their master bedroom is a catch-all of miscellaneous furniture, ranging from an antique sleigh bed to a modern desk to an Indian tapestry. Anita wants a more romantic setting with crisp, clean bedding, ambient lighting and pops of color brought in through artwork, while Michael prefers a contemporary look with a platform bed. They agree that the room's large layout and the unused area near their the fireplace give them the potential for an awesome master suite.

Season 3, Episode 12

A Patio With Personality

Searching for advice on how to update their patio, Eric and Mona Lisa Valenzuela posted a picture of their backyard on HGTV.com's Rate My Space and got only a 1.3 rating but lots of valuable feedback. Now, they dream of a space that's designed with family function in mind, along with a romantic vibe including a cozy fireplace and a barbecue. They've also asked host Angelo Surmelis and his team to take a cue from the way that they've decorated the inside of their house when choosing furniture and accessories for the great outdoors.

Season 3, Episode 13

Minimalist Asian Style Master Bathroom

Brett and Deidre Kotch want a master bathroom that reflects their minimalist, modern design sensibilities. From an unused door to the broken jet tub to dated ceramic tiles to shallow his-and-hers sinks, they're ready to demolish the whole room. After perusing images on HGTV.com's Rate My Space, they were drawn to spaces with warm woods, clean lines and subdued palettes. Host Angelo Surmelis and his team bring in their manpower and expertise, and Brett and Deidre can't wait to see what's in store.
