Six of the most memorable designers from seasons past come to Los Angeles to take part in the first-ever Design Star All Stars competition. At stake: a $25,000 cash prize and a special appearance on an HGTV show. Arriving at the world-famous Pacific Design Center, they are met by host David Bromstad, the very first Design Star winner. For their first All Stars challenge, they must each design a room that completely represents their design perspective. And they will have at their disposal all the magnificent showrooms of the PDC, so unlike on Design Star, there is virtually no limit to their resources. Each of the designers has something to prove and a desire to be vindicated for having been eliminated the first time around. So passions and creativity run high, as the designers race to complete their rooms in less than two days. When time is called, the designs are evaluated by Vern Yip, Genevieve Gorder, and special guest, designer and star of CSI: Miami, Emily Procter. The Design Panel chooses a winner for this week's challenge, and one designer is faced with being eliminated from the competition for a second time.
The five remaining Design Star All Stars must transform two large rooms in the home of married couple Jonathan Roberts and Anna Trebunskya, who are professional ballroom dancers on the hit show Dancing With the Stars. Jonathan wants a sophisticated man cave, and Anna wants a chic living room/dining room that can double as a rehearsal space. The All Stars divide into teams to create beautiful rooms in just three days, with a total budget of twenty thousand dollars. Both teams struggle over creative and financial decisions, as they attempt to satisfy their clients and impress the Design Panel. Monica Pedersen, host of HGTV Green Home Giveaway 2012, joins the Panel to decide who will be this week's winner, and which designer will be sent home. Only four designers will continue in the competition, vying for an appearance on an HGTV show and a cash prize of $25,000.
The four remaining All Stars arrive at a studio, where they are surprised to see two identical TV living rooms. Host David Bromstad informs them that they will team up to update these old-fashioned TV stages, inspired by the beloved 1980's sitcom The Facts of Life. The hit show was about young girls at a private boarding school, and the designers must re-imagine the main room of the house as if the girls were going to school today. The All Stars must consider all the principles of good design, but also think about how their spaces will look on television. With just two days to complete their transformations, and the pressure to make it to next week's finale, the stakes are high. The very special guest on the Design Panel is actress Mindy Cohn, who played Natalie on the original Facts of Life series and who is also an avid design enthusiast. Mindy joins Vern Yip and Genevieve Gorder to decide which designer will be eliminated, and which three designers will continue on to compete for $25,000, a guest appearance on an HGTV show, and the right to be called the first-ever Design Star All Stars champion.
For their final challenge, the remaining three All Stars must each design the interior and exterior areas of a converted shipping container, part of a popular trend in eco-friendly living. The small interior dimensions of these containers (less than 7' x 20') mean that the designers must come up with smart space-saving solutions, while still creating a beautiful and distinctive space that includes sleeping, dining and sitting areas. The designers have less than two days to complete their transformations. On the morning of the second day, they are surprised with visits from their loved ones, who have flown in to give them some extra motivation. Emotions run high as the designers strive to win and make their loved ones proud. Joining Vern Yip and Genevieve Gorder on the Design Panel is Carter Oosterhouse, star of HGTV's Million Dollar Homes. Host/Mentor David Bromstad also joins the Panel for this very special finale. At Evaluation, the winner is chosen to receive $25,000, a special appearance on an HGTV show, and the right to be called the very first Design Star All Stars champion.
