If you’re looking for a way to set your home apart with unique wall art that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, this modern DIY with HGTV’s Design Star: Next Gen winner Carmeon Hamilton will be right up your alley. Bonus? It only takes as long as it takes to finish one cocktail.

To start, mix up your drink. Carmeon chose a bubbly French 75. To make your own, add 1 ounce burnt sugar syrup, 1/2 ounce lemon juice and 2 ounces of pear liqueur to a cocktail shaker. Shake well and pour into a flute. Top with champagne for a sweet sip you can enjoy alongside your sophisticated crafting.
Materials Needed

Tear and Arrange Paper

Once you’ve selected your frame, cut a sheet of white paper to fit inside. This will be the background of your artwork. Using a straight edge such as a ruler, begin to tear strips of the black paper in various sizes.
Pro Tip: Invest in quality paper; the unique texture and rich pigment are what make the art so simple and beautiful.
Arrange the black strips on your white paper until you find a pattern you love. Then glue it down using your glue stick.
Add Accents

Next, it’s time to add the gold accents. Using gold paint and a paintbrush, add accents in organic shapes throughout (Images 1 & 2). “The more imperfect, the more hand done it looks, like a human did it. That’s what you’re going for,” says Carmeon.
Pro Tip: When it comes to accents, less is more. Start small and periodically look at your composition from a distance to check your work.
Add Details

For your finishing touches, go in with a thin gold paint pen to add a few thin gestural lines. “I didn’t plan any of this out,” says Carmeon. “I just wanted to go with the flow. You know if you plan too much, you’ll probably never get started.”

Once you’re happy with your final creation, pop it into your frame and admire. And, of course, with art this beautiful, be prepared for guests to ask you where you bought your gorgeous artwork!
