Create a soothing, modern design with these ideas for contemporary kitchens.
Contemporary kitchens are the epitome of the sleek, minimalist layout. Characterized by dark wood or black cabinetry, fresh white countertops and smooth stainless steel appliances, the contemporary kitchen is functional and sometimes artistic in nature.
Contemporary, Cozy Kitchen
This contemporary kitchen has a subdued, earthy palette that warms up the space. The table has a majestic tree image carved into its base, and the surrounding chair backs are sculpted like branches, creating an outdoorsy yet modern space. Photo by David Duncan Livingston. Design by Douglas Dolezal
Daring but Classy Kitchen
This large contemporary kitchen is artful and daring, while still classy and elegant. The space features two islands and different woods throughout, such as Australian lacewood, curly maple and faux-finish MDF. The chartreuse and cherry stains also create great visual appeal, and the earthy tones help warm up this kitchen. Photo by David Duncan Livingston. Design by Lou Ann Bauer in San Francisco
Kitchen on a Budget
This low-budget kitchen achieves high style with patterned metallic tiles, inexpensive metal shelves, espresso cabinets, soy-stained concrete floors, tile countertops with aluminum edging, an earth-toned color palette and stunning pendant lighting to warm up the space. Design by Amy Bubier
Natural Color Palette
This attractive kitchen has plenty of workspace and storage, thanks to the island, which also creates the appearance of a larger space. The soft white cabinets, naturally colored countertops, textured glass cabinet doors and light mocha-tinted subway tiles add a warm touch to the space. The contemporary pendant lighting brings the kitchen into the 21st century. Design by Tina Muller in Glen Ellyn, Ill.
Sit by the Fire
This contemporary kitchen connects to the screened-in porch and features a double-sided fireplace. The hood, sink, dishwasher, refrigerator and icemaker, concrete countertops, and a Dutch-style entrance door complete the look, while the tiled floors, detailed fireplace and darkly stained cabinets warm up the space.
The center island is topped with rusty red granite, while the rest of the space has darker countertops. The three hanging pendant lights illuminate the area and warm the space. The brown leather stools also add beautiful contrast and give the space more depth. Design by Ackerman Interiors
Warm wood tones in this kitchen are brightened by plenty of natural light and a fabric pendant lamp. The space also features a subway tile backdrop, gray countertops and stainless steel appliances, which keep the kitchen looking modern and interesting. Design by Beth Haley in Nashville
When designing your contemporary kitchen, consider pairing dark cabinets with white countertops made from marble or granite stone. Stainless steel surfaces would also work well in this kitchen design. Keep countertop clutter to a minimum, choosing instead to stow away excess appliances and accessories in storage areas. Consider finishing your space with handles and knobs made from brushed silver.
A contemporary kitchen's island will often mimic the design of the countertops and cabinets. Consider, however, lining one side of the island with pub-style seating, using stools made from chrome or other metal.
Choose subtle flooring in a contemporary kitchen design. Slate gray tiles or a simple white marble floor will complete the overall look of this kitchen style. Don't be afraid to include a few pops of color throughout the kitchen. While the look of this design is certainly simple and chic, a red vase or tangerine dish towels can add a bit of life to an otherwise minimal kitchen design. A piece of colorful artwork that serves as the focal point in a contemporary kitchen can also provide a beautiful touch.
