Stage a backyard makeover by adding a square or rectangular fire pit. The strong right angles and lines of these boxy shapes create a formal look that infuses any garden or patio with elegant ease. New square fire pit designs feature blends of classic hardscape materials, like granite and stainless steel, which make any outdoor living space look grand.

From a design perspective, a larger square or rectangular fire pit blends better with a more formal garden. The angular shape, with its more structured feel, lacks the warm coziness of a round fire pit, which easily favors gatherings and conversation. A long rectangular fire pit does, however, provide the perfect complement to a long seating wall or retaining wall. A rectangular or square fire pit also pairs beautifully with privacy walls or square or rectangular water gardens.

Before you add a square or rectangular fire pit, you’ll have to decide if you want a temporary or permanent structure. Many temporary manufactured fire pits feature a round bowl surrounded with a coping that gives it a finished square shape. These fire pits are typically portable, weighing anywhere from 20 to 70 pounds, depending on the size.

The square coping might be made from slate, granite, tile, or any other variety of materials. Select the look you like, keeping in mind that you want it to blend artfully with the surrounding surfaces, as well as your home’s architectural design. The combination of right angle edges presents a lovely and even artistic design element when combined with the often round cover or screen that comes with these fire pits.

Be sure to consider what type of fuel your manufactured fire pit burns. If you have family members with respiratory difficulties, consider a liquid propane-fueled type. These fire pits work on the same types of propane tanks used to fire gas grills.

A permanent square or rectangular fire pit may feature traditional stone or brick construction or have a more modern ambience with a stainless steel or powder coated steel metal finish. With permanent metal fire pits, many homeowners opt for a gas-fueled flame, which allows for some strong design creations using looped fire lines running through fire-glass to create evenly spaced tongues of flame. Adding lava rocks to a fire pan fueled with gas gives the illusion of floating flames.

A concrete permanent rectangular or square fire pit can showcase a variety of styles, from modern molded concrete, to veneered finishes, such as ceramic tile, river rock, or stacked granite. Choose the materials that best complement your home’s architectural style.

Choose the material that surrounds a permanent square or rectangular fire pit with an eye to design. Square pavers echo the fire pit’s angular lines, while flagstones laid in a starburst pattern juxtapose flowing lines with the right angles of the fire pit. Loose gravel provides an informal feel, which can infuse a square or rectangular fire pit with a more informal flair.
