You'll want to ensure that it's a fairly open space, free and clear of overhanging obstacles like tree branches or shrubs. Ashes from the fire pit will tend to float upward, and you wouldn't want to create a fire hazard by placing your fire pit too near any flammable flora.
Next, you'll need to determine whether you're going to build the fire pit yourself, hire a contractor to build it, or purchase a ready-made fire pit or chiminea.
Before setting up a fire pit for your backyard, deck or outdoor living space, be sure to check with your local fire department to ensure that you'll be in compliance with outdoor fire codes. You'll also want to make sure you've set up a sturdy fire pit that's not at risk of tipping over and causing a dangerous situation.
Lastly, whenever using a fire pit, keep a water source nearby in case of an emergency.
