Smart Shopping
In redoing a client's garden, landscape architect Danna Cain of Home & Garden Design found the fountains and benches on clearance. She repurposed stone from a previous project in the yard, with mini garden pebbles added in between. Hosta, New Guinea Impatiens and lacecap hydrangeas surround the fountain and stone pathway.
Perennial Border
Plan out a gorgeous border with elements such as a bench, and select perennials that work best in your climate and with the color scheme that you desire. Designer Cameron Watkins of C. Watkins Garden Co. strives to create a perfect balance of order and natural informality in designing classic gardens.
Refresh Landscape with Mulch, New Shrubs
With $5,000, you can do a landscape facelift by mulching and reshaping the beds and replacing unhealthy or overgrown shrubs, says Bob Graves, owner/designer of Carex Design Group.
Incorporate a Water Feature
A free-standing bowl fountain adds an unexpected element to a front yard and updates a primary landscape bed.
Build a Vertical Garden
Creating a vertical garden can fit into a $5,000 budget, depending on the size and details. This one, built on wood with an irrigation system, used 15 Florafelt 12-Pocket Planters and 12 ferns per panel, says Chris Bribach, owner of PlantsOnWalls.com. The copper frame also was custom-made for the vertical garden.
Bursts of Color
An English Country-style Tudor home in Atlanta's historic Druid Hills neighborhood dates to 1921, but the landscaping has evolved into a vivid swath of tulips and other flowers in red, purple and yellow in beds and window boxes. It's an example of how to liven up landscape beds and position window boxes for maximum effect.
