Rustic Hideaway Kitchen

Building their dream home was important to them because the property has been in the family for generations.

With the help of a kitchen designer, this family designed their dream kitchen with family in mind. They created a wide-open space where the family could gather and the kids could play.

A huge vaulted wood ceiling encloses the kitchen and family room. The massive beams are from Maine and give the space a cozy, barnlike feel.

The homeowners were also not afraid to mix and match metals so they had a beautiful, curved copper hood built for above the stove. Usually copper is done in a bright finish; this hood has a natural beeswax finish that will not only protect it but allow it to naturally patina over time.

With the biggest presence in the kitchen, the granite pulls together all the different colors and materials in the room. The granite on the vast island is one seamless slab; grooves were cut in for a drain board next to the sink. Leftover granite pieces from the countertops were used to create the backsplash.

Opposite the kitchen, a large open space keeps the family together for different types of activities, from games at the dining table to TV watching in the living area.
