For this designer and her architect husband planning a makeover for one of their clients is a piece of cake. But when it came to updating their own Connecticut home, it took them 12 years to decide on a new look. It was well worth the wait. As designers and homeowners, they know that a kitchen has to work well and look great. They certainly achieved that in their own home. This kitchen is filled with distinctive materials, personal touches and lots of spaces where their family can enjoy time together.

In the original kitchen, a support column sat right in the middle of the room. The homeowners decided to eliminate it and open up the space. To do so architecturally, they needed to add crossbeams to the ceiling for support. They continued the wooden crossbeams throughout the space, creating the beautiful coffered ceiling.

The cork floor is warm and quiet, but the homeowners like it because it helps to regularize the odd geometry of the kitchen's layout.

The hood range was cleverly integrated into the beautiful mahogany cabinets. It may be disguised, but the glass doors really stand out. The bottom of the glass panel is clear, while the top is an amber color. The glass is clear enough to see what's stored inside, but muted enough that the homeowners don't need to keep everything perfectly neat all the time.

The homeowners love the pillowed stainless-steel backsplash. The solid surface is easy to keep clean, and it complements the appliances perfectly.

For dry food storage, they added something truly unique to the cabinet doors. The mesh material is similar to the stainless steel that runs throughout the rest of the kitchen. The metal screen serves two very functional purposes. They allow air to circulate throughout the cabinets, and the inside of the mesh screen door is a great place to hang schedules, notices and recipes.

In the center of the expansive dining area is a French farmhouse table where the family gathers for meals. Along the wall is a banquette that provides plenty of extra seating. Underneath the banquette are drawers large enough to hold a month's supply of dog kibble.
