Yellow is a popular kitchen paint color, but for a modern spin on this energizing shade, swap buttery shades for brighter ones that really pop. Look for bold yellows with a hint of neon that feel really electric and use them on an accent wall, your ceiling, kitchen cabinets or an island. The result will be a sunny kitchen that makes you smile the minute you step inside.

While light blues make kitchens feel fresh and airy, some homeowners are choosing to use bolder shades of blue, such as navy. Many interior designers believe navy is the "new black," and it's a great way to introduce a dark color into your kitchen.

Be sure to temper this moody hue with lighter shades, such as white, yellow, gray or even aqua. Cobalt blue is another popular shade that looks fun, yet sophisticated in the kitchen.

Red stimulates the appetite and is a go-to kitchen color for many people, but there's no need to use a traditional, straightforward red when there are so many more contemporary shades to choose from. Cranberry red is one fun variation that can instantly brighten up a kitchen.

If you prefer a red with more pink, consider magenta, hot pink or coral. Used sparingly, these colors can create a sophisticated kitchen space, but pair them with white to keep the look from feeling too feminine. Magenta is really striking when paired with walnut or darker-colored wood. Orange shades such as tangerine can put a contemporary spin on your kitchen decor.

There are many shades of green that really shine in the kitchen. Light, earthy greens are a safe bet, but if you're willing to experiment with more modern shades, give mint, aqua, lime, chartreuse and emerald green a try. All of these greens can really make a statement and will help brighten a dark and drab space.

Mint with white can look shabby chic or fresh and modern depending on which accents are used throughout the space. Lime and chartreuse are more unique shades that could add a jolt or energy to a boring space. Try using these shades on your cabinets and help them pop by using chrome or nickel hardware. If you really want to make a statement, try using aqua in your kitchen, either on your walls or cabinets. An uplifting shade, it pairs well with stainless steel appliances.

Before settling on a bold paint color for your kitchen, ask yourself if you'll still be as into it five years from now. If you're not sure, use a neutral paint color as your base and lightly sprinkle the modern colors in. This will make it easier to switch things up when you're ready for a change.
