On the menu: a luxe entertaining hub with chic style. That's what Dr. Maurice G. Sholas envisioned for the kitchen in his 1880s home in New Orleans. After all, he throws an annual Mardi Gras party with 250 of his “dearest friends.” (Some years the parade marches past his front door!) His new kitchen, designed by Whitney Jones, totally captures the party-ready vibe.

Wow Wallpaper

Maurice gave Whitney creative control, and she surprised him with this teal Kelly Wearstler paper. It perfectly complements the dark cabinets and sky blue ceiling (Porch Ceiling by Sherwin-Williams).

High-Shine Floors

Whitney chose polished porcelain tiles from Floor & Decor for their durability. “They look like marble and are neutral enough that they don’t take away from the kitchen’s bold aesthetic,” she says.

Funky Fireplace

The tiled fireplace is original to the house, and though it no longer works, Maurice considers it one of the kitchen’s key elements. “It blends in beautifully with the new modern layout,” he says.

Relaxing Perch

Maurice says this is the perfect place for sipping tea, watching TV or just gazing at the world outside. “It’s the spot everyone fights over because it’s right in the middle of the action!”
