Can't Find It? DIY It

There’s hardly anything in 4-year-old Dylan Gubler’s bedroom that her mom, Mandi, didn’t make. “I DIY a lot because it’s hard to find exactly what I want,” says Mandi, a crafter and blogger ( When it came time to turn Dylan’s bedroom into a space that fit the little girl’s bubbly personality, Mandi asked for her wish list. “Pink, puppies, and a princess bed.” She managed to get all of those “design” elements in the room and then some. Dylan adores how it turned out.

Honeycomb Wall

The idea for this funky wall came from the stereos of Mandi’s childhood. She painted the wall Extra White Base by Sherwin-Williams, then covered it with hexagons about 16 inches wide, which she made with 8-inch-long pieces of wood attached to the wall with a nail gun. The hexagons are colored in with 23 shades of paint, made by mixing varying amounts of white to eight different colors. Click here for step-by-step instructions on this project.

Picture Frame Headboard

An upholstered headboard made using a 39-inch-by-50-inch frame from a local thrift store took Dylan’s bed to princess-like status. First, Mandi painted the frame white. Next, she wrapped a piece of plywood with batting, covered the front in fabric, and fit it into the frame. To get a tufted look, she stapled down the fabric in 14 places, then hot-glued a fabric-covered button over each staple. Click here for step-by-step instructions on this project.

Mandi’s real estate agent found this nightstand on the side of the road. To make it new, Mandi stripped and stained the wood, spray-painted the drawer fronts white, and replaced the hardware.

Industrial Shelving for Art Supplies

The small cubbies in this shelf make it perfect for storing crafts essentials. Mandi found it at a yard sale and spray-painted it Brass Metallic by Krylon.

Light-Up Initial Sign

For this marquee-inspired sign, Mandi drew a d on a 2-foot-by-4-foot piece of plywood and used a jigsaw to cut it out. (A lumberyard that has a jigsaw can cut it for you if you draw the shape.) Then she drilled holes for the lights. To make the d three-dimensional, she stapled flexible MDF around the outline. The bulbs inserted in the holes are a string of globe lights from Target. Bulldog Cork Art

To fulfill Dylan’s “puppy” request, Mandi projected a pumpkin carving stencil onto the wall, then tacked sheets of cork ( to the wall to cover certain parts of the image. Next, she traced the design onto the cork and the wall, shaped the cork with a crafts knife, and secured it with tiny copper nails. She filled in the rest with white paint. Pom-Pom Blanket

Grapefruit-size yarn pom-poms, which Mandi made herself and attached to the corners, customize this lime green blanket from Target. Click here for step-by-step instructions on this project.

Copper Pipe Hooks

Thin copper tubing from the hardware store made right-height hangers for backpacks. Mandi bought two 8-foot pieces and sized them with a pipe cutter, then attached pipe fittings (elbows and caps) for the hooks. She mounted them to the wall with pipe straps, also from the hardware store.
