Perhaps the most interesting part about resurfacing kitchen countertops is the ability to use a number of textures and materials to achieve your desired surface. Cost-efficient options like self-sticking laminate, ceramic tiles, paint and concrete can all be used to resurface a kitchen countertop at a fraction of the cost required to fully replace the surface.

For example, a Formica countertop that's at the end of its useful life can be resurfaced by first sanding down the surface so an adherent, like epoxy, will easily take to the surface. Once the countertop has been roughed up a bit, spread epoxy grout over the entire surface, then use a large board to level off the surface and keep the edges smooth. Wait for the epoxy to dry, then sand the surface with an electric sander to give the surface an industrial, concrete-like appearance.

Ceramic tiles can also be used to create a mosaic or checkerboard pattern, and flat latex paint is available in a variety of colors to provide a cheap kitchen countertop makeover.
