X Marks the Spot

Sleep tight in this 100-percent cotton sateen bedding that gets softer and cozier with each wash. Showcasing an artist-designed pattern, custom-printed by the fabric experts at Spoonflower, this eco-friendly duvet cover features clever concealed ties in each corner to prevent shifting and a discreet hidden zipper so inserting your comforter is a snap. The pattern is also printed on both sides of the cover so it's visible even when turned down.

Green Up Your Thumb

These painterly planters feature ceramic construction and a hand-applied speckled pattern so each pot is unique. Designed as a watertight cachepot, rather than for use as the planting pot itself, these planters are a trendy way to disguise a greenhouse plastic pot while preventing any drainage from damaging your furniture.

Add Graphic Style Underfoot

Available in 10 sizes, this 100-percent wool rug is hand tufted for maximum softness with a 3/4"-thick pile that'll feel great under bare feet. The rug's large tile-like design will look right at home in a variety of room styles — from rustic to globe-trotting to modern.

Eclectic Dining Room With Gallery Wall

The frames' mismatched shapes on this gallery wall look pulled together because they're all black. And the crisp contrast with the white wall backdrop is a strong visual statement all on its own.

Dramatic Living Room Design

Black and White Country Bathroom

Matte black barn-style sconces hang above polished nickel mirrors in this country bathroom with whitewashed wood walls. Simple, black granite serves as the countertop and backsplash. This is streamlined design at its finest.

Black and White Mantel

To make the white walls of this modern space pop, designers painted the mantel black and used black accents and furniture for contrast. This additional color warms up this area and draws the eye to the mantel, which is the focal point of this space.

Charcoal and White Printed Upholstery

The Khovar collection by L’aviva Home has a vine print with leaves in a charcoal and white color combo. The organic print softens the look of black and white together.

Bold Mural in Boy's Nursery

A black and white rhino mural from Wall + Deco makes a fun statement in this boy's nursery, which is grounded by neon yellow floors. A low sofa and contemporary rocker create a space for relaxing and playing.

Black Spa Bathroom With White Towels

Black can feel like a scary choice on the wall, but it can actually make a space more intimate. This gorgeous bathroom uses the color brilliantly and turns it into a cool platform for crisp color contrasts like the white towels and pretty wood dresser.

White Contemporary Kitchen With Graphic Shade

A Roman shade in a great graphic print wakes up the whole kitchen and pulls together the contrasting light and dark cabinets. Subway tiles are a clean, fresh choice for the backsplash.

Bold Design in Master Bedroom

Dining Room With Coffered Ceiling and Gallery Wall

In this dining room, white walls are highlighted by black trim, including the crown and base molding, coffered ceiling and midcentury modern door, providing a solid structure for colorful decor, such as electic music posters and a graphic CB2 rug.

Black and White Bathroom With Bold Tree Wallpaper

This bathroom is wallpapered in a tree design with a black background, with a matching sink cabinet and modern streamlined toilet. A silver beveled mirror adds a polished finishing touch.

Black and White Powder Room With Bold Wallpaper

Tree-patterned wallpaper makes a bold statement in this small bathroom. A cluster of hanging globe pendants offers a fun lighting solution in front of the narrow mirror. Black tile surrounds the pedestal sink, breaking up the busy wallpaper pattern.

Dining Room With Traditional Black Chairs and Plaid Armchairs

White walls and a natural finish hardwood floor create a clam and inviting atmosphere for this dining room. The natural finish of the table fits beautifully with the room while black dining chairs create a nice border around it. At the heads of the table, matching plaid armchairs add weight and pattern to the room.

Trellis Wallpaper in Cottage Bedroom

Black and white trellis-patterned wallpaper gives a strong nod to this bedroom's cottage style.

Try Small Doses

"Using black for interiors can be scary as it’s usually associated with being dark or depressing," says designer Jodie Rosen. Her advice: "Using hits of black as an accent is a great way to elevate a space and emphasize elements of the design. In this case, we used black on the trim around the range to make the area a focal point and then repeated the black in the oversized fixtures, stools, and the metal detailing on the island."

Kitchen With Ultra-Modern Style

This black and white kitchen showcases a sleek and modern sensibility with its minimalist approach. The room was able to accommodate larger accent pieces such as the artwork and pendant lights, as well as a larger island for additional seating. Matte porcelain tile, cove lighting and rift oak cabinets also help create this rich, modern look.

Midcentury Style Bedroom With Geometric Prints

Mod design has come back strong, gaining a following among folks who weren't around when the style reigned supreme in the 1960s. HGTV fan Torey Carrick perfected the look by covering a focal wall with textured MDF panels and geometric wallpaper. White pendant lights and a zebra-print rug complete the look.

Contemporary Cottage Bathroom With Bold Statement

Graphic black and white tile makes a bold dramatic statement in the shower. Simple subway tile is used throughout the rest of the space to balance, and the pitched ceiling adds height to the room. The clean-lined gray vanity is topped in simple white countertops.

Purely Patterned Powder Room

Graphic black and white wallpaper makes a big statement in this small powder room. A simple porcelain sink and slim mirror don't compete with the bold wallpaper, so as not to overwhelm the space.

Modern Bathroom with Wallpaper and Chalk-Painted Tile

The homeowners didn’t have room in their budget to replace the wall tiles, so Wake + Loom Design painted over the green and maroon tiles with white chalk paint. Then the designers added a graphic black and white wallpaper and installed a chic cylinder light fixture to transform the 1960s bathroom into a sophisticated, modern space.

Mix Black, White—and Green

“Black and white is a classic combination that I will always love,” says designer Brooke Wagner. “Using greenery in a high-contrast black and white room is a great way to soften it up a little, while still keeping the palette neutral.”

Let the Location In

Give your version of midcentury style a more personal look by letting your home’s geographic location influence the design. For this house in Austin, Texas, for example, designer Christen Ales, chose colors and motifs that nod to the southwestern site—and yet still have a midcentury look. “The décor mixes fun bohemian patterns and textures, like this wallpaper from Cavern Home, with modern and more traditional Mexican style furniture silhouettes for a clean, but eclectic look,” she says.

Modern Powder Room With Geometric Backsplash

Sculptural pendants and bold geometric tiles make a splash in this powder room.

Bold Black and White in a Bunk Room

A pair of bunk beds makes this the perfect spot for sleepovers. A fun black and white pattern is carried from the triangle wall decals to the graphic-print bedspreads and white, Danish-style furniture. Model airplanes are hung in a group from the ceiling to give this kids' room its own mini airshow.

Black and White Eclectic Bedroom With Canopy Bed

The designers used white walls and a white floor as a blank canvas on which to layer dynamic wallpaper and strong patterns. The delicate gold canopy bed in the center helps unify the eclectic look.

Foyer With Geometric Painted Floor

To make the pattern last in this high-traffic zone, the designers used high-gloss airport runway paint. The contrast of the dark purple against the white background turns a simple pattern into a dramatic style statement.

Elevate the Deck

Sure, a stained wood deck is nice, but treat it to a coat of black paint and the look becomes significantly more elegant. “Black is versatile and dramatic,” says designer Stephanie Wilson. “Here, the black decking and rail acts as a strong base for the white walls and window trim; the black French doors tie the decking and the walls together and adds a lovely element of symmetry.”

Bookshelf in Bold Boy's Nursery

This nursery is a perfect example of how a room can rock a theme and stay sophisticated, timeless and relevant. This big boy's space will not time out through the use of bold color, dramatic pattern and mature furnishings. The black and white whale wallpaper pattern called for a strong accent color, and red was the perfect choice.

Midcentury Modern Nursery With Gray and Yellow Accents

This look is a result of the client’s love of graphic patterns and color. Designer Karen Wolf used mustard yellow as a powerful accent color against the black and white wallpaper and gray furnishings.

Living Room With Wallpaper Made of Graphic Letters

This living room features a black ceiling as well as bold graphic black and white wallpaper covered in large alphabet letters. A gray sectional sofa and two poufs provide seating in the space.

Black, White and Neutral Bedroom With Lush Furnishings

The symmetrical look of the space — matching end tables and globe lamps are situated on either side of the room — adds to the visually soothing feel. Funky pillows and a faux fur throw add a modern element, and the black accent wall makes the white elements in the room pop.

Minimalist Dining

In this dining room wood meets iron, meets brass, meets leather, meets sheepskin for a perfectly layered affair. Above the dining table, vintage lighting that can be found in industrial buildings was installed; this and many other found pieces were upcycled with the addition of black paint.

Black and White Bathroom With Surprise Pops of Yellow

Add an unexpected splash of color to the inside of your vanity, dresser or nightstand drawers by painting them a bold hue, like this shade of vibrant yellow. The bright, citrusy color brings an unexpected energy to the black and white room. Small black and white tile creates a modern, digital look on the floor below the square sink.

Black and White Master Bathroom With Round Mirror

The goals for this master bathroom? Create a clean, contemporary, timeless, and functional space. The chosen palette was black and white; the designers played with textures and proportion to liven up the room visually.

Sleek, Sophisticated Kitchen Design

The homeowners wanted a texture-rich space with a simple feel, so designers set out to achieve that goal by using cabinets that were a mix of wood and back painted glass. Black granite was added to the countertops, backsplash and range hood. This creates a sleek, streamlined design for the heart of this sophisticated home.

Contemporary Eclectic Dining Room

Sleek leather dining chairs with white stitching surround this rustic wood table in an eclectic dining room. An abstract black and white rug grounds the space.

Private Picture Window With Black Shade

Over this soaking tub, a large 4-by-4-foot frosted glass picture window is softened by a black relaxed Roman shade. "You can’t see in or can’t see out, but it diffuses the light perfectly and makes the entire room just glow gorgeously," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Modern Breakfast Nook With Thick Wall Stripes

The L-shaped tufted bench makes a vibrant statement against the bold, thick wall stripes in this breakfast nook. The Kelly green coloring of the bench complements the floral wall art mounted above. Clear plastic chairs are seated on the opposite side of a modern oval dining table. An orange floral centerpiece and brass light fixture finish the chic design.

Black and White Bookshelf Wallpaper

Black and white bookshelf wallpaper creates a gorgeous accent wall in this modern bedroom. A large glass sliding door lets in natural light to illuminate the white bed covers topping the gray upholstered bed frame with faux fur blanket and charcoal throw pillow. A blue area rug adds a touch of color to the design.

Child's Black and White Playroom

This child's black and white playroom features a large, white Roman shade, striped rug, custom-painted accent wall and a daybed with a rail.

Pop Art-Inspired Living Room

Inspired by his client's custom pop art collection, designer Joe Human packed this modern apartment with bold prints and patterns. In the living room, polka dot wallpaper enlivens the space without competing with the vibrant artwork.

Gender-Neutral Nursery With Animal Accessories

To ensure a comfy arrival for her clients' new addition, designer Kerra Michele Huerta layered the nursery with a plush sheepskin rug and soft accessories. Graphic black and white wallpaper behind the crib will easily grow with the baby, while a handmade sheep from Germany promises to be a great cuddle buddy.

Transitional Foyer With Gallery Wall

In this tasteful foyer, the circular shape of the black and white artwork, all framed in black, is picked up by the topiary, the rug and even reflected in the mirrored cabinet.

Master Bathroom With Edgy Elements

This master bath is dark and dramatic thanks to sleek black floors and cabinets. A gray marble backsplash in the shower adds interest to the room and accentuates its edgy aesthetic.

Olive Green Bedroom With Black and White Headboard

Olive green walls make a gorgeous neutral backdrop for this bedroom's black and white graphic headboard and curtains. The patterns' two different scales keep the duo harmonious.

Iguana Wallpaper Highlights Walk-In Closet

This master bedroom lacked storage and was challenged by its curved shape. Studio Revolution built out a walk-in closet on one side of the room. Rather than hide the presence of the closet—which is the first spot one sees upon entering the space—the designers turned it into a feature by adding fun iguana wallpaper by Timorous Beasties.

Black and White Midcentury Modern Living Room

Simple white walls and ceiling are trimmed with bright white except for the vaulted coffers, boldy painted black.

Wood Console and Floral Wallpaper

With a wallpaper like this one—floral in bold black and white—a subdued wooden console table and simple lamp and mirror are smart pairings. The tabletop styling gives a subtle pop of color from a bright yellow book.

Elegant, Timeless Black and White Master Bathroom

Designers wanted to carry the pretty and classic design into the master bedroom, so they brought in a beautiful clawfoot tub and chrome fixtures. To add an elegant touch to the space, a chandelier with ornate details was added, while the shiplap backsplash and marble tile kept the space neutral and simple.

Sleek Kitchen Island in Stylish Black and White Kitchen

To give the homeowners extra counter space, designers opted for a large kitchen island. The sleek design and black cabinets add contrast to the already monochromatic space while also helping to separate the kitchen itself from the connected breakfast nook.

Coastal Living Room With Seashell-Wallpaper Accent Wall

In this space, the eye is drawn to an indented panel in the wall covered with black and white seashell-patterned wallpaper. A circular mirror adds a brightening effect over the wallpaper that matches the sunny, bright look of the white room.

Traditional and modern elements are combined in this 1920s-era bathroom. The black and white tile is a nod to tradition, but the look is updated with a glass tile mosaic that features a whimsical message in pixilated type.
