The House

“Our house used to have pale yellow siding that didn’t do it justice. Replacing it with gray-painted composite and white trim brought out the pretty original features like the arched door, the curved roofline and our centerpiece chimney," say homeowners Kimberly and Jim Bauman.

“The house already had a gorgeous garden with hydrangeas and daylilies,” says Kimberly. She planted more lilies, along with roses, for color that lasts into the fall. With her addition of zinnias, an annual, there’s always something in bloom.

And believe it or not, the walkway isn't stone! The Baumans got a similar look at a lower cost with stamped concrete in a charcoal shade.

Knotty Pine Front Door

“We replaced all the windows and doors, but the front door was a keeper—we wanted to leave a bit of the house’s history,” says Kimberly. They painted it black, then did white on both the trim and the screen door for contrast. (412-VAD knotty pine door)

The House

"We’re obsessed with our Craftsman bungalow’s vintage details. The cedar shake siding, half-timber trim, and deep eaves fitted with wood corbels all give the exterior real character," say Margaret Beam and Nathan Rutman, homeowners.

In the yard, a variety of leafy plants match the home’s casual-cool energy. "There used to be a lot of boxwood, which felt too structured," says Margaret.

The House

“Our home was all white when we moved in, and it seemed so cold and uninviting," say homeowners Lesley and Scott Clausen. "Once we painted it taupe with a bright yellow door, it turned into a totally welcoming place."

When Lesley and Scott first checked out the house, they could barely see the first-floor windows through the overgrown shrubs in the front yard. Their new landscaping still offers privacy without sacrificing style. It includes stout Scotch heather and red-leaved dwarf Japanese barberry on either side of the front steps, and tall white-blooming plum passion nandina behind them.
