Plant type: Ornamental grass
Hardiness: USDA Zones 4 to 8

This ornamental grass forms a small blue mound that is semi-evergreen. Expect clumps to be short-lived, lasting about three years in the landscape. It grows to 12 inches tall and about as wide.

How to use it: In masses, in containers, along a border, in a rock garden or as a specimen plant. Combine with contrasting textures, such as lamb's ear (Stachys byzantina), and colors.

Culture: Prefers full sun (ideal) to partial shade and a moist, well-drained soil. Plant several close together as each mound does not tend to grow very wide. In spring, cut back to about four to six inches tall. Propagated by division.

Special Notes: Slow-growing ornamental grass for the shade garden. Valued for its brightly colored foliage that has a cascading habit.

Selected Cultivars

  • 'Elijah Blue'. One of the best selections. Reaches about one foot tall and wide.
