  • hot glue gun + sticks
  • jingle bells
  • reindeer ornaments

Pom-Poms Made Easy

For this project, you’ll need a lot of pom-poms — about 70-75 to be exact. To make this step a little easier, we used a handy pom-pom maker. It may look a little intimidating at first glance but is a breeze to use once you get the hang of it.

How to Make a Multicolored Pom-Pom

To make a multicolored pom-pom, begin by wrapping four strands of different-colored yarn around one arm of the pom-pom maker until you reach desired fullness. Close it into the middle once complete. Bring the strands over to the other arm and repeat (Image 1). Cut the yarn and close the second arm. Using a sharp pair of scissors, cut around the pom-pom maker down the middle of each arm (Image 2). Next, cut a 12-inch piece of yarn, wrap around the center and tightly tie a knot (Image 3). Tie another knot to secure the pom-pom. Open up the arms of the pom-pom maker to reveal your fluffy creation. Pull apart the maker from the center to release the pom-pom (Image 4). Finally, trim any excess yarn around the pom-pom for a uniform look (Image 5).

How to Make a Two-Toned Pom-Pom

To create a two-toned pom-pom, follow the same basic instructions as the step above. Wrap one color of yarn around the first arm of the pom-pom maker until full (Image 1). Cut the yarn. Next, wrap a different color of yarn around the second arm and cut (Image 2). Cut a piece of yarn and tie around the pom maker, open the arms and pull them apart to reveal the two-toned pom-pom (Image 3). Trim any excess yarn.

How to Make a Solid Pom-Pom

Creating a solid-colored pom-pom is the easiest of the three methods. Repeat all the same steps as above but with a single color of yarn (Images 1 & 2).

Glue

Attach the pom-poms to a flat styrofoam wreath form with a generous amount of hot glue, mixing the colors and patterns as you go.

Add Accents

To make the wreath a little more merry for the holidays, add gold jingle bells or any seasonal accessory, attaching with hot glue. (Image 1). Next, nestle two reindeer ornaments into the styrofoam in the opening of the wreath and secure with hot glue (Image 2). Optionally, add a thin shoestring bow at the top and let the ribbon tails flow throughout the pom-poms.

Display

Finally, hang your festive creation on any door, surface or room that needs a boost of holiday cheer with a sticky hook for easy removal after Christmas. Or, pair with colorful bottle brush trees on a bar cart, like we did here, for an inviting focal point at your next Christmas shindig.
