How to Dress Up Plastic Pumpkins 01:59

Turn plain plastic pumpkins into bewitching Halloween decor with these spectacularly spooky ideas.

Put those cheap plastic pumpkins to a better use than a basic candy bowl. We’ve got three ideas that will make going all out for the holidays a little easier on your budget.

Terrifying Tiered Pumpkin Planter

Begin by removing the handles from three medium-sized plastic pumpkins. On each pumpkin, use a 1-inch spade bit to drill a hole in the center of the bottom and a hole between the top lip and one of the handle holes. Spray paint the pumpkins with gray paint to resemble concrete.

Next, place a 1/2-inch dowel into a concrete planter and fill with large rocks for drainage, followed by gravel for support. Fill the planter with soil and your choice of plants. Slide one of the pumpkins over the dowel using the holes you drilled. Continue to stagger the pumpkins on the dowel, planting your desired plants in each one.

Spooky Mummy Pumpkin

Spray paint a large plastic pumpkin white and let dry. Color in the eyes and mouth of the pumpkin with a black marker. Wrap the pumpkin with gauze, using hot glue to secure. Finish the spooky look by topping the gauze off with a layer of cheesecloth for extra texture.

Festive Pumpkin String Lights

Upgrade a basic set of string lights by adding mini plastic pumpkins. Simply slide the bulbs into the pumpkins and secure the pumpkins to the string lights using the existing handles. Add a handmade touch by tying 1/2-inch strips of fall-inspired fabric between each light.
