Materials Needed:

  • satin latex paint
  • 3 paintbrushes
  • cotton fabric (1 yard or more depending on the size of your table)
  • fabric shears
  • Mod Podge, matte finish
  • straight edge (like an old credit card)
  • clear, water-based protective topcoat

Paint

Paint the legs and sides. Leisure Blue paint color by Sherwin-Williams was chosen for this side table.

Measure and Cut the Fabric

If the table doesn’t have a lip, cut the fabric the same size as the tabletop. If it does have a lip, add 2 to 3 inches all around. Waverly’s Lovely Lattice in lapis was used ($16 per yard, fabric.com).

Mod Podge

Flip the fabric back-side up and, using a fresh paintbrush, coat the edges with Mod Podge to prevent fraying. Spread a generous amount of Mod Podge over the tabletop.

Cover the edges and the underside of the lip, if the table has one. Smooth the fabric over the tabletop, running a straight edge over it to eliminate air bubbles. If the table has a lip, wrap the fabric over the tabletop’s edge, crimping the fabric as you press it firmly to the table’s underside. Adhere with extra Mod Podge.

Apply three or four coats of Mod Podge over the fabric, letting dry between each coat. Brush on a topcoat to seal it (we used Minwax Polycrylic, $21 per quart, homedepot.com).
