Project by Bettijo B. Hirschi from Alexandria, Va.

Bettijo loves spa treatments--the smells, the ambiance, even the products. But since visiting a spa can be more than a little expensive, she finally decided to try to make some of these products herself. After much trial and error, Bettijo has come up with a perfect process for an ocean mist soap.

Steps:

1. Measure out the lye and water. Combine lye and water in a pitcher. Add thermometer to the pitcher, set aside.

2. Measure out oils into a large pot and put over heat on stove to melt. Line mold with paper.

3. Grind sushi seaweed in coffee grinder.

4. Lay out clay, essential oils, etc. Once oils are at same temp as lye and water, put oil pot onto a trivet. Pour lye mixture into oil. Mix with immersion blender (plastic stick blender) making sure to wear purple heat-resistant gloves.

5. Once the soap mixture reaches "trace," herbs and clays are thoroughly incorporated into the soap mixture along with pure essential oils. Must do this quickly! (Hint: Tracing looks like a slightly thickened custard--not instant pudding but a cooked custard.)

6. Pour soap into wooden mold. Tap the mold several times to help release air bubbles and smooth the top of the soap as well as possible. Put mold in oven that has been preheated to 170 degrees. Proper curing is crucial as it makes for a mild and gentle, yet hard bar of soap.

7. Pour lye mixture into oil. Mix with immersion blender (plastic stick blender) making sure to wear purple heat-resistant gloves.

8. The next morning, remove soap from the oven. Separate the slab of soap from the wooden mold and cut into blocks or loaves. Cut loaves into individual bars.

9. The next morning, remove soap from the oven. Separate the slab of soap from the wooden mold and cut into blocks or loaves. Cut loaves into individual bars.

12. Stamp bars with your own mark if desired. The bars are left to harden for another few days. Put bars in box and tie to signature soap dish.
