Materials Needed:

  • 12"-16" cardboard globe
  • pliers
  • awl
  • craft knife
  • vinyl card door trim
  • flathead screwdriver
  • lamp kit
  • washers
  • phillips head screwdriver
  • wire cutters/strippers
  • light bulb
  • 2 hooks for hanging

Preparing the Globe

Remove the globe holder with pliers (Image 1). Tip: Depending on the construction of the globe, you may need one set of pliers at the top and bottom of the axis to disassemble.
Use an awl to poke a hole on the 45˚ latitude line (Image 2). Use a craft knife to carefully cut all the way around the globe at this line. Press lightly and make several passes until you cut through the cardboard to avoid tearing the paper. Remove the bottom and discard. Carefully clean up any rough edges with the craft knife.
Use the car door trim to cover the rough edge of the cut. Cut a length of the car trim that is slightly bigger than the circumference of the opening to make it manageable. Open the channel of the trim with a flat head screwdriver and push it snugly in place (Image 3). There is adhesive inside of the channel that will hold it in place. Continue working with the screwdriver and trim to cover the edge of the opening. Use the craft knife when the edge is complete to cut the trim for a tight fit.

Installing the Lamp Kit

Remove the wire from the lamp kit. It should be loose on one end and fitted with a plug on the other end. Insert the loose end through a small piece of all thread (hollow threaded tube) fitted with a washer and nut on one end. Tip: if possible, use the washers that were part of the globe assembly. Insert the wired all thread through the hole in the top of the globe (Image 1). On the inside, add another washer and nut. Tighten the nut on the inside and outside very tightly (Image 2).
Pull the wire through the hole and strip some of the protective coating from the two wire ends, if necessary. Insert the wires through the bottom of the light bulb housing provided in the kit and attach the two wires to the posts available on the sides of the socket. Unscrew the screws with a Phillips head screwdriver. Make a hook with the ends of the wires and hook them around the screws. Tighten the screws snugly on the wires (Image 3). Cover with the bottom housing and screw on the top housing to enclose the wires.
Next use the threads on the bottom of the socket to attach it to the all thread inside the top of the globe. Add a light bulb (Image 4).

Use a hook in the ceiling just over where you want the lamp to hang. Tie a loose knot in the cord at the desired length. Place the loose knot over the hook. Place another hook in the ceiling very close to the wall. Drape the cord to the other hook and allow the cord to fall to the floor. Plug the cord in and turn on the light. Let there be light!
