How to Make a Positive Intention Mosaic Wall Clock

Create this interactive, mosaic wall clock using paper, acrylic paint and polyurethane.

Materials and Tools:

white paper
decorative papers
sheet metal
1/4" thick hardboard (high density fiberboard)
scrap pieces of 3/4" thick medium density fiberboard
wood glue
spray adhesive
decoupage medium
poster board
laminate film
acrylic paint (black, gold, green and red)
paper punches
decorative edge scissors
clock mechanism
power drill with 1" flat drill bit and 1/2" drill bit
tin snips
4 clamps
rotary cutter and cutting mat
clear plastic quilter's cutting grid
1/8" black foam board
craft knife
12 round magnets
straight edge
jigsaw and safety glasses
hammer and nails
computer and printer (optional)

  1. Cut an 18" x 12" piece of hardboard for the clock face using a jigsaw. Wear safety glasses while using the saw. Sand the edges.
  2. Cut a 17" x 11" piece of hardboard for the clock backing with a jigsaw. Sand the edges.
  3. Cut a 16" x 10" piece of sheet metal with tin snips.
  4. On the 18" x 12" piece of hardboard, drill a one inch hole at each of the hour positions using a drill and a 1" flat drill bit.
  5. Coat one side of the clock face and clock back with wood glue and sandwich the sheet metal between the glued sides. Clamp the pieces together and let dry.
  6. Cut three pieces of scrap medium density fiberboard and nail them to the back of the clock in a U-shape to hold the clock mechanism.
  7. Paint the front and back of the clock with black acrylic paint. Let dry.
  8. Paint six sheets of white paper - two red, two green and two gold. Gather together six decorative papers.
  9. Cut these papers into 12" x 12" squares - two squares of each color. Cut black poster board in 12" x 12" sheets.
  10. Spray adhesive glue onto a poster board sheet and the back of one paper square and sandwich together. Smooth out bubbles or wrinkles with a brayer. Repeat until all paper pieces have poster board backing.
  11. Cut the poster board backed paper into strips of varying widths - from 1/8" up to 3/4" - using a cutting grid and a rotary cutter or scissors.
  12. Cut a 12" x 12" sheet of clear laminate film and remove the paper backing. Place the film on the work surface, sticky side up.
  13. Place a strip of paper along the lower edge of the film. Place a second strip of paper above the first leaving a 1/32" space between the strips. Continue placing strips of paper (varying the width and color) until the film is covered.
  14. Place the sheet of paper strips, film side down, on the cutting mat. Position a straight edge perpendicular to the paper strips and use a rotary cutter to cut varying widths of strips. The result is laminate strips with different sizes of squares and rectangles.
  15. Cut another 12" x 12" piece of laminate film and peel off the paper backing. Place the film on the work surface, sticky side up, and place a strip of squares and rectangles along the bottom edge. Place all the strips until the sheet is full, leaving 1/32" between rows.
  16. Brush a thin coat of decoupage medium onto the sheet of mosaic tiles and let dry.
  17. Cut several different size squares and rectangles from the papers backed with poster board. Brush a contrasting paint on a stamp's surface and press the image onto the center of the square or rectangle. Let dry.
  18. Punch shapes or cut designs with either punches or decorative edge scissors to embellish the stamped images. Glue these stamped images onto the face of the clock in desired areas of the clock's surface.
  19. Cut sheets of mosaic tile to fit between the images on the clock face and glue them into place. Do not cover the 1" holes at the hour locations.
  20. Coat with decoupage medium and let dry.
  21. Either write or print 12 intentions (such as: be kind, have fun, eat chocolate, etc.) on 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" pieces of paper. Cut 12, 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" pieces of foam board. Glue the papers to the foam core board. Glue a button magnet to the back of the foam core board. Let dry.
  22. Drill a hole in the center of the clock using a 1/2" drill bit and install the clock mechanism according to the manufacturer's directions.
  23. Place the intention magnets at each of the 12-hour locations on the clock. Move them throughout the day.
