Centrally Located

Sitting open to the dining room and living room, the user-friendly kitchen includes ample storage, lots of workspace and a strong contrast between the beauty of natural wood and a rich ebony finish.

Work Zone

Designer Brian Patrick Flynn says this urban kitchen’s almost 10-foot-long center island was designed to be a spot for food prep and working, with bookshelves incorporated in front of the island that offer a chance to add your own personality to the space. “There’s not enough width here to sit and then also be able to access the door to the basement,” he explains.

Enjoy the View

The oversized fixed window that overlooks a lush green area in the side yard above the range brings lots of natural light inside this open space designed for preparing meals and modern entertaining.

Great Flow

This side view of the kitchen looking toward the living room shows how the island was placed to allow good traffic flow in and out of the space. A wide aisle between the range and the sink in the island makes it easy to move between the kitchen’s work zones.

Pantry Essentials

The large solid oak cabinets that flank each side of the range are completely custom, made with dovetailing of joints for increased durability and strength. This tall pantry cabinet to the right of the range includes a semi-automatic espresso machine with an elegant black finish and stainless-steel accents, stylish coffee cups, dry goods and cookbooks to inspire tasty meals at home.

Easy-Access Drawers

This look at the backside of the island shows the easy-access drawers that provide ample storage space for various kitchen essentials. “There’s no hardware on the drawers,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn. “We simply had wood notched out to create an integrated handle.”

Stylish Sink

Crafted from enameled cast iron, the kitchen’s durable black undermount single bowl sink resists burning, chipping and cracking, and provides ample space to soak and wash cookware.

Superior Wash Performance

The kitchen also includes contemporary-style paneled dishwashing drawers that provide superior wash performance with advanced features. Two water sensors in the kitchen that prevent damage from water leaks are part of the home’s top-notch wireless security system.

Organized for Chores

This top utility drawer with integrated handle includes dividers for keeping gloves, twine, tape and other household items organized and ready for chores.

Hygge Lifestyle

This view shows how the open kitchen sits between the super-sleek fireplace area off the dining room and the living room in back of the home that offers a cozy and inviting space for entertaining and relaxing.

Island Style

From behind the island, you can see into the living room and talk with guests while working on a gourmet meal that can easily be transported to the dining room just steps away. Removing walls, installing a steel beam and opening up the first floor of the home with the addition at the back transformed the property and made it much better suited for modern urban living.

Multifunctional Great Room

The spacious windows in the living room also bring lots of natural light into the kitchen which, along with the living room, dining room and fireplace area make up the great room of this extensively renovated, two-level urban home with lots of green space and recreational activities just outside the door.

First-Rate Faucet

The sink’s semi-professional matte black single-lever handle faucet includes an easy-to-clean coated hose and removable coil, and a unique three-function pulldown spray head that makes it easy to tackle a variety of kitchen tasks.

Cooking Zone

Having counters on each side of the pro-style range helps keep the cooking zone safe and efficient. On the counter to the left of the range sits a vintage-inspired onyx-black artisan standing mixer with 5-quart stainless steel bowl, 10 speeds and modern features, so you can whip up your favorite meals and treats for family and friends.

Easy-Access Storage

The spacious drawers to the right of the range offer easy-access storage for various kitchen essentials, like a supply of tea, candles, folded linen napkins and a hammered stainless-steel salad serving set for entertaining at home.

Clean and Simple

The kitchen’s window ledge offers a chance to display bottles of special olive oils and vinegars, while olive-wood pepper mills and a natural wood pizza peel sit on the Mesabi Black counter to the right of the range. “The countertops are super clean and simple granite, which I don’t usually use but it really fits the house because it’s all about texture,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Showpiece Range

The kitchen’s pro-style range with a contemporary style offers outstanding performance, so you can make some of your favorite restaurant-style dishes at home. From an easy-to-clean durable surface to precise cooktop controls, spending time at the range has never been so appealing.

Contrast and Drama

The lighter natural oak base of the island coordinates with the drawers by the range, and provides contrast for the island’s matte Mesabi Black Granite counter and the matte black cabinets flanking the range.

Improved Outdoor Connection

The design and build team kept the home’s existing 11-foot-high ceiling in the kitchen and dining area and extended that same ceiling height into the new addition where the living room with sliding-glass doors now sits. “Previously you couldn’t get to the backyard from the ground floor space,” says build manager Dan Faires. “Now you can see the backyard when you walk into the home.”

Seamless Look

This view looks toward the refrigerator to the left of the range, with matte black panels that makes it blend with the black-painted custom-made solid oak cabinets. “It helps create a balance and seamless look for the whole kitchen.” says build manager Dan Faires.

Advanced Food Storage

The kitchen’s spacious paneled refrigerator was specifically designed and engineered to look after your food by adjusting temperature, humidity and more inside, to keep ingredients fresher longer.

Low-Maintenance Style

Like almost all of the other indoor rooms in this updated home, the open kitchen has a low-gloss, low-maintenance whitewashed wood floor with creams, tans and grays that creates a beautiful backdrop for the other design details in the well-designed space.

Organized Drawers

This look inside one of the upper drawers in the kitchen’s working island shows how the dividers inside keep supplies like lighters for candles, twine and scissors organized.

Personal Touch

This wide-angle photo shows the expansive front of the island, with lots of open shelves for books, family photos and collectibles that add personality to the space.

Entertaining Zone

The kitchen’s center-point location on the first floor of this extensively renovated urban home makes it ideal for entertaining, with a user-friendly layout that allows more than one cook to work in the space at the same time.
