Super-Architectural Space

Just steps from the home’s open kitchen, the formal dining room is an elevated architectural space where everyone can gather to enjoy a home cooked meal in a stylish setting.

Simple and Elegant

The simple color scheme with pure white walls and a combination of natural textures gives the dining room a modern, European-style elegance that fits this extensively renovated urban home, which celebrates the Scandinavian culture of the region.

Stylish Shades

The dining room’s four windows include black cellular shades that not only help reduce the cost of the annual energy bill, they also add beauty and texture to the space.

Natural Beauty

The handmade, pedestal-style dining table with an oak top and natural concrete base has an architectural and modern look that fits perfectly with the overall design philosophy of this urban home located in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Statement Lighting

The dining room’s Scandinavian-style ceiling light features carbonized steel construction and a black finish. The impressive light fixture includes a scope-like shade at the end of each arm that can be adjusted to direct lighting over a wide area.

Contemporary Chairs

The black dining chairs with steel frames and padded seats have a sleek style that help give this space a modern and contemporary look.

Modern Art

Custom-framed art that offers a modern interpretation of a Viking helmet by American-Turkish designer and HGTV host John Gidding decorates the wall of the dining room, a perfect fit for this urban Scandinavian farmhouse.

Light and Airy

Located next to the stairwell, the design of the dining room and surrounding spaces helps the main floor of this urban home feel light and airy. Removing walls, installing a steel beam, and opening up this first floor with an addition at the back totally transformed the property and made it much better suited for modern urban living.

Extra Sturdy

The pedestal-style dining table includes a thick solid oak top with antique finish set on a natural concrete base that is pet-friendly and sturdy.

Global Influence

Black-and-white ceramic bowls in different sizes with global patterns and smooth glazed interiors decorate the top of the modern dining table.

Big Feature

This architectural screen wall with vertical slats of wood that have been ebonized helps define the dining room and allows light to filter in from the adjacent stairwell to the upper level of the home.

Open and Airy Feel

A pair of fixed windows with black metal frames allow lots of natural light inside and look out to the side yard, a paved transitional space between the front and back of this smartly renovated two-level urban home.

Cozy Rug

Designer Brian Patrick Flynn says this large area rug that helps anchor the dining room looks like a chunky Nordic sweater, handmade with black and gray jute and wool with eyelash fringe detailing. A premium nonslip rug pad underneath protects the weave and helps extend the life of the rug.

Front Yard Focal Point

Two of the four windows in the dining room look out to the beautiful covered front porch of the home, with an inviting natural cedar deck and cedar plank ceiling.

Slat Wall Style

This side view of the architectural screen wall with the vertical slats of ebonized wood shows the dining room on the left side and the stairwell on the right. “It makes the space feel bigger,” says build manager Dan Faires.

Local Flavor

A black-and-white stretched canvas print with black frame and contemporary style in the stairwell by the dining room showcases the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport (MSP).

Beauty and Function

On the stairwell landing sits a custom-framed blueprint by a Turkish-American designer, art that depicts canoes by HGTV host John Gidding, and a Viking ship. The eye-catching art decorates the top of a wall-mounted rack with sturdy hooks for easy-access storage for bags, caps and more.

Big Improvement

Initially the home included a solid wall where the architectural screen wall now stands. By doing a screen wall, the team was able to expand the stairwell without impeding into the dining room space. “It’s a statement on its own,” says build manager Dan Faires. “It’s a vertical dark wood slatted wall, but it’s not heavy.”

Moment of Pause

Just off the dining room sits this sleek and sculptural modern fireplace area. “There’s not a lot going on but it’s on purpose,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn. “It’s a moment of pause as you enter this architecturally stunning house.”

Low-Maintenance Floor

Like the other main living spaces in this urban home, the dining room and fireplace area have a whitewashed wood floor with a low-gloss, low-maintenance style that creates a beautiful, fresh and clean look.

Sparse Space

The fireplace clad in cement is flanked by two low-slung, whitewashed wood Scandinavian-style chairs with woven leather straps in this purposely sparse space.

Great Flow

This view looking from the fireplace area off the dining room toward the modern open kitchen and living room shows the great flow between spaces on the lower level of this extensively renovated urban home.
