Refreshed Farmhouse in Upstate N.Y.

This farmhouse has a long history in Garrison, N.Y., but lost much of its character over the last several years. So, the designers rebuilt the front porch and constructed a second floor in the same style as the original architecture, to give the owners more room to stretch out. They then updated the interior with colorful, contemporary furniture.

White Farmhouse With Front Porch

One of the projects in the refurbishing of this farmhouse in Garrison, New York was to rebuild the front porch, which had been removed. To honor the home's history, designers used a standing seam metal roof supported by chamfered posts. The decking is painted heart pine.

White Farmhouse With Diamond Window

A new front porch and second story addition give the owners of this upstate New York farmhouse more room indoors and more ways to enjoy the outdoors. The design carefully echoed the home's lovely original architecture like the dormers.

Front Porch With Swing Bench

A swing seat beckons from one end of the newly-built porch, or pull up one of the pretty natural fiber armchairs. Either way, the afternoon is easy as pie to while away.

Sun Room and Porch

The front porch lets into a sweet side room, once a screened porch. Soft seating and board and batten walls make a welcome, out-of-the-way spot for curling up on an afternoon.

Scandinavian Sitting Room With Pink Rug

A screened-in porch was enclosed to create this wonderfully cozy reading nook and play room. To keep the project budget friendly, designers used board and batten walls, rough-sawn faux beams and simple, built-in shelving.

Sun Room and Pink Rug

Unique touches like the pink Moroccan rug and vintage milking stool layer subtle color and personality into the home's simple living areas.

Scandinavian Foyer With Yellow Door

Easiest way in the world to freshen up a front or side door? A coat of paint in a cheery color. Matte black hardware is so becoming to this yellow side entrance.

Scandinavian Mudroom With Blue Floor

The new mudroom is as chic as it is affordable: Closets are from Ikea and the paneling is cost-effective board and batten siding. The punchy graphic floor is encaustic cement.

Arched Niche and Dining Room View

The arched niche looks like it was always part of the home, but actually it was added and now provides graceful display space. The doorway next to it is a new larger opening into the dining room.

Dining Room With Window Seat

The dining room gets a big bay window to let in the view and a window seat from which to enjoy it up close.

White Scandinavian Kitchen With Yellow Towels

The kitchen now feels so open and peaceful with a glazed white brick backsplash that bounces sunlight around the space. A sheetrock cover makes the range hood fade into the background.

White Scandinavian Kitchen With Brick Chimney

Opening up the kitchen and dining room let the sun shine into both areas. The kitchen got new Shaker-style details, the chimney a coat of whitewash, both enhancing the room's friendly personality.

Scandinavian Kitchen With Brick Fireplace

Tall pantry storage, a kitchen island and an appliance garage are all additions, hiding clutter and upping the kitchen's efficiency. New white oak paneling eases transitions between the older parts of the home and the new.

Eclectic Living Area With Green Table

A few carefully chosen antiques are sprinkled into the living room and, paired up with the modern artwork and intriguing textiles, bring in so much character.

Kitchen Pantry Entrance With Pocket Door

The entry to the pantry used to have bifold doors that were bulky and hard to operate. All that trouble was solved with a new pocket door.

Scandinavian Master Bedroom With Cat

All friends, furry or otherwise, can approve of this master bedroom's simple approach to color: a natural palette with accents of rust and navy.

Kid's Bathroom With Diamond Window

The diamond-shaped window in the kid's bathroom is original to the home. Its jelly-colored glass casts beautiful reflections on the white walls and paneling.

Shabby Chic Girl's Bedroom With Pink Chair

The youngest member of the household gets an enchanting room of her own with vintage floral wallpaper, a lovely complement to the 1890s home, and a zippy hot pink chair.

Girl's Desk With Wallpaper

This lovely girl's desk was created for a song with simple wooden shelving and a graphic tan wallpaper backsplash.

Kid's Room With Ladder

The new second-story bedroom is imagination central, with a ship's ladder leading up to a loft play area and a fun diamond-shaped window.

Kid's Room With Loft

The play space in this kid's room, part of the second-floor addition, was expanded by going up! A loft was created underneath the dormer window with the potential to be just about anything (daydreaming nook, pirate ship, secret hideout). A barn door hides an expansive closet.

White Farmhouse Rear Exterior

A second-story addition created more bedroom space in this farmhouse, while on the lower floor, a side porch was closed in to make a new mudroom and sitting area.

Sunken Patio With Arbor

One of the home's delightful outdoor spaces is this sunken patio. The patio itself is stone, carefully constructed to blend harmoniously into the setting. Over the dining area, vines climb up and around a steel arbor to make a lush canopy.
