Whether you're looking to bust summer boredom or simply want to encourage your child to step away from the TV screen, these DIY painted story rocks are sure to do the trick. Start with the adorable farm-themed set seen here, then move on to fairytale castles, beautiful beaches, rustic camping and beyond. The options truly are endless, and kids will love adding new elements to their collections.

Though optional, we started by painting our rocks white to allow the images to really pop. Once dry, use markers to draw themed characters. We chose a farm animal theme, so our characters included pigs, chickens, cows and even a barn and fences. Once all of our farm animals and accessories were complete, we covered a coffee can with red adhesive vinyl, drew a barn door on it and filled it will all of the story rocks. To finish, we topped it off with a bowl on top for the ideal barn look. As your child's stories become more elaborate, encourage them to add fresh elements to the set. This is one kid-friendly activity that definitely grows with your child.
