Before + Afters: Serene, Resort-Like Residence

With a soothing white interior, deluxe chef's kitchen and backyard that includes a lazy river, it's hard to believe that this family home was ever too dark or outdated. Drawing inspiration from luxury seaside retreats, designer Marie Flanigan filled the interior with serene blues, grays and creams and incorporated resort-level amenities.

Resort-Style Backyard With Lazy River

A lazy river and pool with sunken swim-up bar provide nonstop fun in this luxurious backyard. In the distance, a rock formation serves as both a cave to explore and an enchanting waterfall.

Before, Patio

Stone Patio With Brown Wicker Sofas

The patio's light stone floor complements the home's pale exterior walls and is a handsome foil for the dark brown outdoor sofas.

Soft & Stylish Outdoor Lounge

Two cream-colored chaises create a stylish spot for sunbathing. Just behind the outdoor lounge, bi-folding doors lead into the pool house, which boasts a living room, dining space and open kitchen.

Coastal Kitchen Made for Entertaining

After an afternoon in the sun, guests can head towards the kitchen to refuel. Here, light wood cabinets keep plates and utensils within easy reach, while a long counter with five wicker stools invites everyone to take a seat.

Kitchen Boasts Crawfish Boiler, Hibachi Grill

Yes, it's true; this kitchen includes a crawfish boiler and a hibachi grill! While guests take their pick of the island or counter, the chef can prep dinner using the clean, stainless steel appliances.

Welcoming, Wood-Infused Dining Room

For more formal affairs, the owners and their guests can move into the dining area. Here, an elongated table and dark wood chairs complement the room's more rustic details, while lanterns illuminate the space into the evening.

Living Room With Pretty Painted Fireplace

Just a few steps away, wicker armchairs and a white-painted fireplace create a light and airy living space. To establish cohesion between this room and the dining area, designer Marie Flanigan introduced another lantern-style light fixture.

Living Room, Before

Neutral Transitional Living Room With Cow Hide Rug

The former family room was dark and bland. Now, the room has fresh white paneling that bounces sunlight around the space and glass doors that fold up, accordion style, to join the interior with spacious outdoor areas.

Before, Kitchen

White Cottage Kitchen With Lantern Pendants

For a kitchen that's as practical as it is pretty, cabinets reach ceiling high and there are two islands (countertops for days!). The refrigerator is integrated into the look with a white front.

White Cottage Kitchen With Copper Pitcher

Designers switched out the kitchen's dark wood cabinets for fresh white ones and added not one, but two islands, one of which is walnut with a soapstone countertop. The lantern pendants are from Urban Electric.

White Cottage Kitchen With Built-In Desk

Over the kitchen's built-in desk, gray and white plaid makes a punchy backdrop and picks up the pattern that's also used above the sink

Before, Eat-In Kitchen

Neutral Cottage Dining Room With Plaid Shades

The refreshed dining room takes a sweet cottage direction with pale gray-and-white plaid shades, a white chandelier and a relaxed dining table with gray chairs.

Before, Dining Room

Gray Transitional Dining Room With Wainscoting

Light gray wainscoting lines the formal dining room that continues the pale palette with white upholstered dining chairs, a plush white rug and floor-length white curtains.

Before, Lounge

Country Bar and Lounge With Wine Room

The new bar and lounge looks country chic with an exposed beam ceiling and a bar-height, concrete tasting table. Along the back wall, copper shelves are suspended from the ceiling.

Before, Master Bedroom

Neutral Traditional Master Bedroom With Canopy Bed

Gently arched ceilings in the master bedroom suite are finished in shiplap paneling. The slim canopy bed gets treated to hand-embroidered Leontine linens from Tribute Goods. Antique doors connect the bedroom to the adjacent spa bathroom with a soaking tub and steam shower.

Shabby Chic Neutral Master Bedroom With Sofa

Throughout the house, the designers used an ocean-inspired color palette of blue, gray and cream. Here, in the master bedroom, touches of palest pink bring softness and a slightly feminine touch.

Before, Master Bathroom

White Cottage Spa Bathroom With Dressing Table

Antique double doors lead from the master bedroom to the airy bathroom. Cabinetry picks up the doors' gray (though in a paler shade), and the arched shiplap ceiling adds a layer of intriguing texture.

White Shabby Chic Spa Bathroom With Arched Ceiling

Yummy details make the spa-like master bathroom an inviting retreat, including a freestanding soaking tub, walk-in steam shower and a dressing table.
