Countryside Escapes: Colonial Revival in SF Suburbs

Talk about getting away from the city! Though located in the suburbs of San Francisco, this new construction home takes major cues from Southern architecture. Dark green shutters, long pillars and a covered porch create a classic, Colonial Revival exterior out front, while a pool and garage bring up the rear.

Colonial Revival Farmhouse Front Exterior and Yard

This home would fit in perfectly anywhere in the South, but is actually located in the suburbs of San Francisco. The owners of the custom-designed residence both have Southern roots and wanted a house for their family that felt familiar.

Colonial Revival Farmhouse Front Exterior

On the east corner of the house is a home office surrounded by windows. Giving that space lots of natural light was an important priority of the design as one of the homeowners often works from home.

Colonial Farmhouse Exterior With Green Shutters

Dark green doors and shutters are a common occurrence in Southern architecture and so were a natural choice for this home. The color picks up the lush, surrounding landscape.

Porch With Green Rocking Chairs

This porch knows what to do with a lazy afternoon: grab a rocking chair and watch the world go by. When the sun goes down, a row of lantern pendants lets the easy life continue.

Farmhouse Foyer With Antique Bicycle

Although the home is newly built, the owners wanted it to have the charm and character of Southern homes from the 18th to early 20th centuries. To pull off that look, designers used six different types of casings and white painted millwork common to houses of that era.

Traditional Foyer and Staircase

The foyer opens directly onto this grand staircase in classic Colonial style. Traditionally, the hallway behind the stairs would lead to another room. But here, it goes to the back yard. French doors let sunlight into what would otherwise be dark, closed off space.

Blue Transitional Living Room With Blue Art

A textured wall covering adds visual interest to the formal living room while continuing the home's more casual aesthetic.

Cottage Eat-In Kitchen With Brass Pendants

To give the kitchen more of an old-school feel, designers put in a farmhouse sink and found a vintage-looking range. The layout is open with plenty of cozy details, like the dining table right in the center.

Traditional Eat-In Kitchen With Brass Pendants

Large-scale appliances are disguised behind cabinet doors to help give the kitchen an older, more traditional feel. The look of the brass cabinet and drawer pulls is continued out into the room with brass pendants.

Blue Cottage Butler's Pantry With Metal Sink

The butler's pantry has an elegance all its own with a hammered metal sink, textured glass cabinets and graphic wallpaper. The countertop is butcher block, handsome and practical.

Traditional Blue Dining Room With Oval Table

Blue paint around the windows and on the crown molding is a lovely pop of color in the formal dining room. The move a tasteful way to bring color into a space without completely covering a wall.

Blue Traditional Powder Room With Molding

The floor-to-ceiling molding in the powder room is painted a handsome gray blue and accented with nickel hardware. The sink's exposed legs give an airiness to the small space.

White Cottage Family Room With Entertainment Center

The gracious family room hosts movie and game nights in spectacular style with a large, overstuffed sectional and a big-screen tv plus entertainment center.

Playroom With Blue Plaid Rug

This big playroom is kid heaven with a built-in entertainment center and lots of floor space for games.

Green and Blue Cottage Playroom With Window Seat

The playroom's long window seat comes with deep storage drawers, a dream for stashing toys and trinkets, even craft supplies.

Green and Brown Traditional Home Office

Designers connected the home office to the backyard via lots of large windows and a color scheme that echoes the trees outside.

Blue Cottage Laundry Room With Dutch Door

Can't beat a dutch door for charm factor (bonus: more ventilation!). Other lovely details in the laundry room include the patterned mosaic tile floor and folding table with a turned leg, reminiscent of early 20th century Colonial homes.

Blue Cottage Master Bedroom With Striped Bench

The master bedroom is meant for resting and relaxing, spacious enough for a seating area and tea for two! On the ceiling, plank boards are painted white in keeping with the rest of the home's farmhouse friendliness.

Gray Master Bathroom With Blue Vanity

Wainscoting extends even into the bathroom for a distinguished look that pairs prettily with the pale blue vanity and marble flooring.

Master Bathroom With Mirrored Tub

The master bathroom's mood is soft with ample natural light, a gently curving ceiling and a freestanding bathtub with a mirrored exterior.

Pink Cottage Girl's Bedroom With Window Seat

This girl's bedroom puts solid color on the ceiling—a move that cozies up the space—and a fresh, graphic print on the walls. A window seat is a sweet spot to curl up, with the added advantage of two large drawers for storage!

Blue Cottage Kid's Bathroom With Round Window

Littles get their own bathroom with a dressing table, sweet-as-can-be round window and mosaic tiles in a pretty blue-and-white pattern on the floor. Blue painted beadboard gives the walls depth and texture.

Blue Traditional Kid's Bedroom With Planet Mobile

The style in this kid bedroom is out of this world with a colorful planet mobile and star-themed bedding.

Neutral Bathroom With Striped Mosaic Tile Floor

In the guest bathroom, small black-and-white mosaic tiles make a ticking stripe on the floor.

Blue Cottage Mudroom With Mosaic Tile Floor

The mudroom's mosaic tile floors and pierced-face cabinets recall early 20th-century Colonial homes. They're pretty and practical, too: the perforated cabinets give sports equipment a chance to air out and the tile is easy to clean on wet, muddy days.

Side Brick Stoop and Rocking Chair

This brick stoop (rocking chair included) is a side entrance and another classic feature on traditional Southern homes; it opens into the mudroom. Kids, muddy boots, backpacks, tennis rackets...all are welcome.

Farmhouse Rear Exterior and Backyard

The outdoor entertaining possibilities at the house are endless with a wide, covered porch that includes sitting areas, a dining table and a barbecue. The porch opens onto to a huge, grassy yard whose big oak tree has a swing, of course. And then, there's the pool.

Country Porch With Blue Swing

The best place to while away an afternoon? Right here. The wide porch offers lots of seating options: swing (big enough for naps), armchair or a seat at the dining table.

Back Porch With Blue and White Chairs

Outdoor meals get this lovely setting with room for eight around the table and the pool nearby (for the after dinner dip!).

Backyard With Pool and Pavilion

The backyard pool has its own poolhouse and spacious patio. The patio is meant for smaller gatherings and includes a fireplace and a tv. The poolhouse keeps guests and residents comfortable with a shower and bathroom.

Farmhouse Side Door and Arched Window

A side entrance allows for easy access to a study, convenient for the homeowner who often conducts business and meets with clients from home. The large, east-facing window lets sunlight stream into the house.

White Three-Car Garage Exterior

The garage does the neat magic trick of looking like a separate building from the main house, but actually they're attached (much handier for loading and unloading).
