Loft Mudroom With Built-In Bookshelves

A mudroom-esque area was created just inside the main door with built-in bookshelves that finish in a bench. Large cubbies beneath the bench are just right for fabric bins that store bags, shoes, extra throws and more.

Open Plan Contemporary Kitchen With Brown Rug

Exposed beams made of Douglas fir and pine were one of the elements designers preserved from the loft's original architecture. They serve as a jumping off point for the many other natural elements used throughout the home. Here, in the kitchen, marble waterfall countertops and simple, dome-shaped pendants are so pretty.

Contemporary Neutral Open Plan Kitchen With Dome Pendants

The kitchen contrasts hickory wood floors and exposed wood beams with airy details like white walls, countertops and a backsplash. Dome-shaped pendants and angular barstools with round seats are a fun mix of shapes in the open concept space.

Open Plan Neutral Kitchen With Rose Arrangement

The warm feel of the loft's Douglas fir and pine timber beams is carried into the kitchen via wood shelves, barstools and even the cutting boards. The shelving is open, letting the handsome ceramic dishes be an integral part of the decor.

Contemporary Great Room With Black Dining Table

A natural fiber rug marks out the dining area in the loft, the texture another nice dimension amidst the rich layering of materials. Painting the exposed duct white lets it disappear into the ceiling.

Neutral Open Concept Contemporary Great Room

For this loft apartment in New York City's SoHo neighborhood, nine small rooms were combined to create this incredibly open, bright space. Designers worked hard to protect the original architecture and history of the building, salvaging materials like the brick, timber and steel and repurposing them throughout the home.

Contemporary Dining Area With Baguette

The simplest details are stunning because you can really see them. A timber beam stands out from white brick walls. Along the back of the dining area, a built-in bench is dressed up with black and brown velvet pillows.

Contemporary Neutral Living Room With Leather Sofa

Designers kept the bones of the loft simple and elegant, painting brick and exposed ducts white for a bright feel and highlighting warmer textures like the wood beams. All materials and furnishings were purchased from local artisans.

Contemporary Neutral Loft Living Room With Black Chair

The lower Manhattan loft encompasses 2,500 square feet of living space and a full floor of the building. High ceilings and large windows flood the rooms with natural light.

Contemporary Loft Living Room With White Brick

Natural materials were the foundation of the loft's look, from exposed brick painted white and hickory floors to the leather sofa and natural fiber rug in the living room. For the floors, designers maintained the 2 1/4" width plank that was typical to artist lofts of the building's early 20th century era.

Midcentury Dresser and Houseplant

A midcentury dresser's lovely lines are called into focus against the clean palette of white brick walls. The Henri Matisse print adds beautiful color and shape to the tableau.

Drawing Table in Loft Apartment

Anyone seated at this drawing table couldn't ask for better light. The windows were one of the areas the designers paid special attention to: Limestone and fir and pine beams were uncovered under all the windows. And all the original radiator covers were sandblasted and repainted in a handsome black.

Contemporary Neutral Master Bedroom With Black Steel

In the beautiful master bedroom suite, one half of the room is a sleeping area, the second half a spa bathroom. The two spaces are separated by an airy black steel wall that ties in with the steel window and door frames.

Contemporary Sitting Area With White Brick

In the renovation of the apartment, designers uncovered exposed brick buried under 6 inches of stucco. Painted white, the brick lightens up the loft and is a bold contrast to the blackened steel elements.

Ensuite Bedroom With Black Steel Wall

This bedroom demonstrates more of the openness of the loft with a blackened steel window wall that looks into the ensuite bathroom. Here, and throughout the home, original details like exposed brick, steel and wide plank wood floors are gracefully combined with contemporary furnishings.

Spa Bathroom With Black Steel Wall

The square shape of this bathroom's black steel boundary wall is picked up by the small white mosaic tiles that line the shower. A more organic note is brought in via houseplants and cedar floor planking.

Contemporary Spa Bathroom With Open Shower

The back half of this bathroom is a wet room with an open air shower that gets spa-like serenity from a waterfall showerhead and wood beam floors.

Industrial Wardrobe Rack in Bedroom

Instead of closets, an open wardrobe rack matches the urban edge of the industrial New York City loft.

Southwestern Sitting Area With Pink Rug

This sitting area uses the Southwest as design inspiration with a tall cactus, bright pink Southwestern rug and a leather butterfly chair cozied up by a sheepskin.

Contemporary Loft Bedroom With Sliding Door

To temper the airiness of high ceilings, designers painted the walls of this bedroom a darker shade for a more intimate mood. A sliding glass-and-steel door closes the room off from the rest of the loft.

Burgundy Contemporary Bedroom With Black Bed

Burgundy walls are a handsome choice for this bedroom, matching the solemnity of the black bed and nightstands while also wrapping the room in warmth.

Black and White Small Bathroom With Gray Shower Curtain

A black accordion door separates the toilet and shower from the sink in this bathroom. The palette is clean black, white and gray, with compelling details like floor tiles that mimic fish scales.

Gray Powder Room Sink

No detail was overlooked, as seen with this bathroom sink where the stone's texture shows up beautifully against dark gray walls. A slim cylindrical light fits perfectly in the corner.
