Dave and Kortney Wilson

They're cute, energetic, opinionated and they don't always see eye-to-eye, but watching these Nashville home-improvement pros doing what they do is just downright fun.

For those in need of a quick catch-up, here it is: Kortney Wilson is a real estate pro with a keen eye for design. Her husband and business partner, Dave, knows a thing or two about construction. Together they have a passion for seeking out forlorn and neglected houses in and around Nashville, transforming them into beautiful homes then placing them back on the market to realize a healthy profit. Flipping houses can be risky business, as many would-be entrepreneurs have learned the hard way, but this high-energy, dedicated couple seems to have found a formula for success.

The Bronte Project

Case in point: Here’s a sampling of their handiwork as featured in the final episode from their freshman season on HGTV.

Before

After

In terms of the exterior makeover, nothing earth-shattering, right? This 2000-square-foot stone house already had a certain amount of charm on the outside but, as Dave and Kortney soon discovered, plenty of ugly on the inside. That’s where things got interesting.

Before

Before

So when this three-bedroom rancher was built — probably in the late '60s — wood paneling in every room, acoustic tile ceilings, oversized tile and wide grout were evidently de rigueur. The home’s kitchen was a narrow galley, poorly laid out. And overall, any subsequent remodels had scarcely done the place any favors.

Kortney’s design plan called for taking out a number of main walls, creating an open flow between the kitchen, dining area and living room, creating two distinct living spaces and reconfiguring the master to create an elegant bedroom with en suite bath and twin walk-in closets.

Dave and his crew took care of ripping out walls, demoing the kitchen (without saving the original cabinets, to Kortney’s chagrin) and reworking the fireplace. Kortney kept the interior remodel clean and classic with a palette dominated by white and grays, furnishings that blends contemporary with rustic and beautiful hardwood floors.

One original attribute of the house that Kortney and Dave were able to take full advantage of was the generous number and size of the windows. These were given fresh treatments and utilized to full effect to bring lots of natural light into spaces that were now visually re-energized with a light palette and open design.

The Upshot

Kortney and Dave purchased this home for $190,000 then invested $120,000 in renovations. Based on the size of the lot, nearby comps and the level of upgrades, they listed the house at $450,000. The final sale price: $445,000, realizing a net proceed of $135,000.
