Joanna's Design Tips: Southwestern Style for a Run-Down Ranch House

This run-down, abandoned farmhouse was a complete gut job. See how Chip and Joanna transformed it with rustic, Southwestern-inspired style.

This was a whole new kind of Fixer Upper renovation: Instead of Chip and Joanna finding a house for their buyers, homeowners Sterling and Casey brought them a home on a beautiful 2,000 acre farm that has been in Sterling's family for four generations. The problem? The home was abandoned for more than a decade, leaving it nearly crumbling and full of unwelcome guests (Read: Opossums, spiders, mice, oh my!)

Almost everything had to be gutted — even the shiplap couldn't be saved — but you won't believe what the finished home looks like now, starting with the rustic ranch exterior:

Inside the house, Joanna created a Southwestern-inspired interior with natural wood and stone tones and terra cotta tile.

Elegant Kitchen with Exposed Beam and Brick

Exposed Beams and Brick Add Rustic Charm to Elegant Kitchen

As seen on fixer upper, Chip installed a large kitchen island to maximize the space the family has for cooking and food preparation. Then, he and Joanna removed the drywall to expose the brick, giving the space a unique, rustic look. Then, Joanna added exposed beams to give dimension and drama to the space, while elegant pendant lights tie the space together.

Repurposed Wood Wall in Master Bedroom

Master Bedroom with Repurposed Wood Wall

Chip and Joanna, of HGTV's Fixer Upper, created a focal point in this master bedroom with a repurposed wood wall. The light wood wall complements the natural wood trim throughout the home, while white bed linens help to soften the space. Large windows allow in plenty of natural light, while a lighted ceiling fan and pendant lights on either side of the bed also help to bring light to the space, making it bright and inviting.
