It's deja vu all over again as Chip and Joanna return to their former avocation as house flippers.

Memory Lane

When Chip and Joanna decide to go back to their roots and see if they've still got what it takes to be house flippers, they start out with a visit to the first house they ever flipped, comparing the kinds of improvements they did way back when with the kinds of super-renovations they pull off today.

Spoiler alert: You'll probably find their beginner flip-house, even post-renovation, a bit on the underwhelming side. The popcorn ceiling is still where it once was — and so are all of the walls. It was a modest makeover on a beginner budget, and a far-cry from what Fixer Upper viewers have come to expect in more recent endeavors

Before the farm, this is something Chip and I did all the time. We've been doing a lot of renovations for clients lately, but I think every now and then, to change things up, a good flip house will re-energize us.

But that was then. This is now. Chip and Jo then embark on a mission to locate a new project home to revive and flip. After an arduous search, and a bit of healthy competition as to who can find the most promising flip house, they settle on a stone cottage with dated features but some genuine potential.

With a Little Help from Ella

For this project, in lieu of discerning clients to appease, Joanna turns to daughter Ella for creative consultation. At age nine, Ella has already begun to show the beginnings of interest in design, so this makes for a good teaching moment for mom and daughter.

After receiving some thoughtful design input from Ella, it will come as no surprise that, a Joanna sets about amazing things with the home's kitchen and an upstairs bath, bringing rustic style and textures with wood, brick and stone.

Arched doorways and substantial wood beams play heavily into the design plan. A key upgrade is also added when chip and Jo transform an attic space, previously used just for storage, into a character-filled study with a vaulted ceiling and window seat.
