Ben and Ginger Are About to Become Your New Favorite Renovating Couple

The Good Morning America star and her husband learn on the go as they renovate their new abode on DIY Network's Renovation Realities: Ben and Ginger.

Coming May 6 to DIY Network, Renovation Realities: Ben and Ginger follows Ginger Zee, chief meteorologist for Good Morning America, and her husband, NBC features reporter Ben Aaron, as they search for and renovate a fixer-upper in the New York City suburbs. Spoiler alert: You’ll fall in love with them instantly. Here are nine reasons why:

Ginger is adorable, and Ben is adorkable.

As a features reporter for NBC, Ben regularly makes a fool of himself on camera. It doesn’t stop when he’s off the clock, and Ginger loves every minute of it.

They always agree...

Ben and Ginger are always on the same page about their vision for the future home — which comes in handy when outside opinions challenge their design choices.

…Except for when they don’t.

Ah, well. You can’t agree 100 percent of the time, right? When Ben and Ginger disagree — for instance, when it comes to objective things like measurements — they don’t hold back. Warning: They’re cute even when they argue.

Ginger’s super-handy. Ben? Not so much.

Ben, a lifelong city apartment dweller, is clueless when it comes to home buying and renovations. (“I thought escrow was a soup,” he said.) Luckily, Ginger’s parents did plenty of renovating growing up and she learned from them along the way, even renovating two fixer-uppers in Michigan in her twenties. She has the patience of a saint as she teaches Ben the difference between drywall and plaster and what you should and shouldn’t spackle (floors, don’t spackle floors).

They laugh through the struggle.

Ben and Ginger manage to keep their sense of humor intact even when they’re at peak frustration with any given task, such as when Ben misses the mark on a full row of nails on a mudroom cabinet.

They’ve both got vision.

Ginger can see past the surface problems. “As gross as it is, I like the space,” she said of the outdated kitchen and dingy floors. Ben has vision, too — like suggesting they turn an eyesore of a wood-burning stove into a settee.

Their families will lend a hand.

Baby Adrian isn’t old enough to wield a sledgehammer yet, but Ginger and Ben’s parents stepped in to help with demo to save costs. As for which pair is more handy, we’ll let you be the judge. In Ben’s words: “We have Ginger’s mom, Dawn, who is like Napoleon meets Joe Pesci. We have Ginger’s stepfather, Carl, who is the Brawny man, mustache and all. We have my mom, who is dressed like she’s about to hit the runway, and my stepfather, who spends the entire time drinking coffee and smoking cigars.”

They’re prepared to get their hands dirty.

There’s some nasty stuff lurking behind the kitchen cabinets, and Ginger’s mom, Dawn will make sure you know how to tell whether it was left by bats (look for silvery flecks — that’s the remains of insect wings) or mice (no silvery stuff).

They take the challenges in stride.

When all the expected surprises of rehabbing an old house — including everyone’s favorite, asbestos! — rear their ugly heads, Ben and Ginger suck it up and make it work.
