4 Incredible Pop-Topping Transformations on 'Raise the Roof'

See before-and-after photos of the historic Denver homes featured on DIY Network's Raise the Roof that get built up — literally.

By: Jessica Galliart

How do you add more space to a bungalow in a tight lot? You build up, of course.

As featured on DIY Network's Raise the Roof, contractor Keith Nylund specializes in taking smaller, historic Denver homes and increasing their square footage by removing the roof ("popping the top") and adding a floor — or two. And despite changing the home's overall structure and look on the outside, he manages to maintain the historic integrity of its interior while also giving homebuyers the modern edge they're looking for.

Check out these before-and-after photos of four of the homes featured on Raise the Roof, airing Tuesdays at 11 p.m.|10c on DIY Network, and head to DIYNetwork.com for more incredible transformations.

Spanish-Style Mansion

A Denver bungalow turned into a mini mansion with a rooftop party space and a view of the mountains? Yep, it happened.

Corner Lot Craftsman

Even though he ran into some trouble mid-renovation — think: sinking bedroom — Keith managed to maximize the potential of this tiny house on a spacious lot.

1910 Brick Bungalow

Why just add one story when you can add one-and-a-HALF stories? The third-floor loft adds another unique touch to the formerly small home on a busy street transformed into one of the best houses on the block.

100-Year-Old Craftsman

This early 20th-century Denver home didn't just get a second floor with a stellar balcony off the master suite, it also got a new finished basement that feels more like a cozy getaway than a basement.
