7 Alternatives to Your Favorite Summer Flowers

April showers bring May flowers, but which ones should you take home from the florist?

Finding or creating the right floral arrangement can be tough. Once you've discovered your go-tos, it's easy to get caught in a rut. Sunflower, baby's breath, repeat. The usual bouquets and vase-worthy combos get a little stale after a while, which defeats the purpose of adding a fresh and bright addition to your decor. Buying a repeat bouquet once is a coincidence, but going back time and time again is a choice.

That said, if you're not a gardener or any kind of expert, it's not as easy as it sounds to track down an alternative, especially when considering the idea of what's in season. Your favorite blooms just may not be ready for picking at the moment.

If you're looking for a new summer flower, we've got a few suggestions — based on some already popular blooms. Add these to your home for something new, fresh and completely different.

1: If you love daisies, you'll love…plumerias.

Plumerias echo the clean and bright white and yellow color scheme of daisies but with a more tropical, summery vibe. They're also available in several different colors, including red, pink and purple, for a new twist on a classic look.

2: If you love peonies, you'll love…double tulips.

Double tulips still have the full, lush look and soft, feminine color palette of peonies, but they also have one major perk: they're much more affordable. Anyone looking to avoid breaking the bank can grab these less costly double tulip bulbs and get to gardening.

3: If you love sunflowers, you'll love…gaillardias.

These blanket flowers are a bold choice. Much like sunflowers, they have a pretty standard summer aesthetic, but these incorporate red and yellow and are gorgeous throughout their different stages of blooming, thriving in the heat of the warmer months.

4: If you love hydrangeas, you'll love…butterfly bushes.

True to their name, these bushes attract butterflies, but they're also a great option if you love hydrangeas. The butterfly bush adds an even more vibrant pop of color to a room and can last beyond the summertime.

5: If you love zinnias, you'll love…shrub roses.

For any fans of low-maintenance flowers, shrub roses have all of the color with none of the commitment. They work in a multitude of environments and aren't as overdone as regular roses, though, be warned, they do also have thorns.

6: If you love lavender, you'll love…Aster.

In case you're tired of the lavender-scented overload (laundry detergent, candles and just about every other home option on earth) but still want a to add a purple pop to your decor, Aster is available in several different shades. It's unique, easy to manage and naturally attracts butterflies.

7: If you love baby's breath, you'll love…scarlet sage.

Ok, deep breath. Yes, scarlet sage is bright red and not a soft, whispering white like its classic counterpart, but it also maintains the soft simplicity of baby's breath while adding an unexpected and design-friendly twist.
