3 Global-Inspired Outdoor Makeovers You Can Copy
Transform your deck or patio with just five elements.

If your patio is a blank slate other than a couple of chairs and a table, turning it into an inviting outdoor room can seem daunting — but it doesn’t have to be. Starting with a few basic pieces, designer Erica Reitman gave one patio three distinctive looks inspired by three spots around the globe: the South of France, Mexico and Morocco.

Believe it or not, all it took to perk up this patio was a few accessories like plants, pillows and rugs. See the three international-inspired makeovers below, and copy your favorite look at home with just five elements.
South of France

1: Bring a collected feel to your space with vintage picnic baskets. Stack a few on top of one another, and you've got an extra side table.
2: Add subtle color and scent with lavender and other flowering plants peeking out of baskets.
3: Give plain terra-cotta pots a timeworn look by faux whitewashing them.
4: Delicate floral patterns look chic yet relaxed. Incorporate them into your space on pillows, napkins and tablecloths.
5: A soft palette of cream, yellow and blue helps the whole look come together. Let the colors pop with a natural jute or sisal rug.
Mexico

1: Hardy plants like cacti and other succulents are commonly found in Mexico and are easy to care for. Place plain pots in baskets for added texture.
2: Add color and comfort underfoot with layered rag rugs.
3: Mexican textiles tend to be heavy on color and pattern. Bring this look into your space with plenty of bold patterned pillows.
4: Warm up your patio with a chiminea, traditionally used for heating and cooking in Mexico.
5: Finish with vibrant accents for added personality. Here, a pompom garland is strung over a vintage easel.
Morocco

1: With their intricate designs, metal Moroccan lanterns can cast a gorgeous glow on your outdoor space. Pick up a few in various sizes and group them together.
2: Moroccan textiles are big on texture. This fringed pouf can be used as either an extra seat or a side table.
3: Inspired by traditional Moroccan motifs, trellis-patterned rugs are readily available at many price points.
4: Look for plush pillows with lots of embellishments: fringe, sequins, tassels. Stick to a neutral color palette for a unified look.
5: Dress up basic baskets with easy DIY tassels, and fill them with extra throws and blankets for chilly evenings.
