DIY Glow-in-the-Dark Chalk Spray for Instant Summer Fun

This is one summer project your kids will actually want to do.

In the dog days of summer, it can be hard to get kids off the couch and out in the fresh air. Not anymore, folks! While classic chalk is always a winner, this DIY spray chalk adds a few new elements kids are going to love. For one, they get to help make it. Plus, it squirts, which opens up a whole new world of creativity. Lastly, and probably best of all, it glows in the dark. So, basically, it’s the perfect summer activity. See for yourself here:

Get creative after dark with this washable, glowing chalk spray.

Pretty cool, wouldn’t you say? You’re probably dying to buy some squirt bottles and get to work, but first let’s go over a few notes. While you could potentially use glow-in-the-dark paint to get your glowing effect, it simply doesn’t work as well as using neon paint and a blacklight flashlight. We deemed this to be the best option for the ultimate glow. And while an older child could do this project alone, little ones will need some adult supervision.

Now let’s make that chalk! We started with a few heaping spoonfuls of cornstarch. We filled each bottle about one-fourth of the way up, but for thicker chalk, you’d want to add more. Since cornstarch is a thickening agent, you just need to decide how thick you want the chalk to be and adjust accordingly, always making sure it’s still runny enough to be squirtable.

Next, add a big squirt of neon paint. You won’t need a lot, and you can always add more if the end result isn’t as saturated as you would like. We started by simply covering the top of the cornstarch with paint.

We’re so close to chalk time! Now fill each bottle with warm water. Go as warm as you can go and still hold the side of the bottle so it mixes easily. A bamboo skewer works great to scrape the bottom of the bottle and mix up all the cornstarch.

Once you close each bottle, give it a good shake to make sure all ingredients are thoroughly blended. Now turn off the lights, grab your blacklight flashlight and get ready to hear some "oohs" and "aahs."

If you don’t have easy access to squirt bottles (check the condiment aisle at your local grocery store), this chalk recipe also works well in spray bottles, water guns and even balloons. The kids will be chalking it up all summer long!
