5 Pop Culture-Inspired Halloween Parties to Throw This Year

Because who doesn't love a good theme party?

Related To:

Halloween is less than a week away, and I for one couldn't be more excited. Not just for the costumes and copious amounts of candy, but also for the theme parties that go hand in hand with the holiday. There's something so special about well-thought-out parties with decorations, drinks and outfits that are perfectly themed to one central idea.

And while some might say Halloween on its own is enough of a theme, I'd like to disagree. Picking a relevant and timely piece of pop culture to focus on makes the holiday so much more fun. Not only will your guests have an easier time narrowing down their costume choices, but you can craft cocktails and snacks that fit your theme which makes the whole affair one to remember.

Having a hard time deciding on a theme? Look no further than this year's biggest pop culture phenomenons. From the Olympics that captivated us all to the television shows, movies and games we can't get enough of, read on for five theme party ideas your guests are sure to love.

1: Stranger Things

Obviously this one won't come as too much of a surprise. The Netflix show became a smash hit almost the instant it premiered, and for good reason. It's got everything you could want in a Halloween party: monsters, '80s fashion, great characters and waffles. Ask your guests to dress up as their favorite character (but don't be surprised if you get a ton of Elevens and Barbs), and whip up a gourmet Eggo bar for a fun take on party food.

2: Team U.S.A.

The Olympics may have ended, but our fascination with the country's most elite athletes is far from over. From the fierce gymnasts known as The Final Five, to the greatest Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps, there are so many great athletes your guests could dress up as. Plus, it will give you another chance to put your patriotic decorations to good use.

3: Suicide Squad

Okay, so you may be tired of seeing Harley Quinn costumes already, but this DC Comics movie was one of the most hyped film events of the summer, so if you're going to throw a Suicide Squad-themed party, now's the year to do it. There's a ton of characters to choose from, so your guests are sure to show up in something impressive.

4: Pokemon Go

Even though Pokemon has been around for years, the new smartphone-based iteration that premiered this year took off like wildfire and became an instant sensation. Relive the madness with a themed party where your guests can dress up as their favorite Pokemon or as trainers. Decorate with DIY Pokeballs and whip up some themed snacks. This theme works particularly well if there will be kids in attendance.

5: Gilmore Girls

If you're anything like us, you're most likely waiting with baited breath for the continuation of this beloved series to premiere next month. To help bide the time, why not revisit your favorite characters by donning their favorite duds and transforming your home into Luke's Diner or Lorelai's eclectic home? Serve up plenty of coffee (or coffee cocktails) to keep everyone well-caffeinated (the Gilmores wouldn't have it any other way).
