5 St. Patrick's Day Cocktails With an Unexpected Twist

Celebrate St. Paddy's Day with something a little better than (dyed) green beer.

St. Paddy's Day is here again, which means it's time to break out your favorite green clothes (lest you want to be pinched all day long), put on some traditional Irish tunes and pour yourself a drink to celebrate the Emerald Isle. And while you can't go wrong with famous Irish beverages like a nice dry stout or a glass of Irish whiskey, why not step it up a little bit this year? Not by adding green food coloring to a cheap pint of beer, but by trying something a little more thoughtful.

Read on for five unexpected alcoholic treats that are perfect for St. Patrick's Day.

1: Cold Irish Coffee

This cocktail was created by Jack McGarry of The Dead Rabbit (aka the best bar in the world), so you know it'll be a crowd-pleaser. And it turns the famous Irish Coffee recipe on its head by using cold coffee instead of something hot.

  • .5 oz. coffee liqueur (McGarry uses Galliano Ristretto)
  • 1.5 oz. chilled Irish coffee mix (see below)
  • 1.5 oz. Irish whiskey (McGarry uses Clontarf)

Add the ingredients to a bottle and refrigerate. Once cold, pour the mix into a chilled glass and top with whipped heavy cream. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.

To make the chilled Irish coffee mix, combine 1 ounce of demerara syrup (a two-to-one ratio of sugar to water) with 5 ounces of French-press coffee.

2: Orchard of Oats

If you typically reach for a pint of stout on St. Paddy's Day, this cocktail might be right up your alley, as it takes plain stout up a notch with the addition of hard cider.

  • hard cider (we used Angry Orchard Crisp Apple)
  • oatmeal stout

Fill a glass halfway with oatmeal stout, then top with hard cider.

3: Gaelic Grasshopper

This delightful drink, created by mixologist Pamela Wiznitzer, features two St. Patrick's Day classics (Irish cream liqueur and Irish whiskey) but adds a mint-chocolate twist thanks to Brancamenta, a minty Italian liqueur, and creme de cacao.

  • 1.5 oz. Irish cream liqueur (Wiznitzer used Kerrygold)
  • 1 oz. Irish whiskey (Wiznitzer used Teeling Small Batch)
  • .5 oz. Branca Menta
  • .5 oz. creme de cacao

Add all ingredients to a shaker and shake lightly before straining over crushed ice. Garnish with fresh mint and shaved chocolate.

4: Joan of Arc

McGarry from The Dead Rabbit created another cocktail that puts a fun twist on St. Patrick's Day drinking, this time thanks to cucumber juice and champagne (talk about refreshing!). And as an added bonus, this beverage resembles the gold at the bottom of a rainbow.

  • 1.5 oz. chamomile-infused Irish whiskey (McGarry used Clontarf 1014)
  • .5 oz. lemon juice
  • .25 oz. cucumber juice
  • .75 oz. rich honey syrup (2 parts honey, 1 part water)
  • .5 oz. honey liqueur (McGarry used Celtic Honey)
  • 2 oz. Champagne

Add all ingredients (except Champagne) to a mixer, add ice and shake. Add the Champagne, then strain into a flute.

5: Guinness Truffles

OK, so these don't really count as a cocktail, but they're such a fun twist on Irish-themed drinks, I just had to include them. These little truffles capture the best of both chocolate and Guinness Irish stout, what could be better?
