Back in the spring, we took 12 trendy colors and pitted them against each other in a battle of the hues we called Color Vs. Color. Now, we’re back at it again with the hottest shades for fall — and it's up to you to decide the top color of the season.
So what’s in vogue this autumn? To find out, I consulted with my fellow HGTV.com editors. Inspired by trends in fashion, home decor and our favorite seasonal foods and flowers, we came up with 12 hues we’re loving for fall, ranging from a soft sage green to a bold candy apple red. Take a peek at a few of our color picks below. When you’ve found your favorite hue, don’t forget to cast your vote! The winner will be revealed later this month.
“I love pretty much every shade of green, but I’m feeling especially drawn to tried-and-true forest green right now,” says HGTV.com executive editor Kelly. “It feels classic and nostalgic.” Inspired by Pantone’s Lush Meadow, I landed on this hue that takes traditional forest green up a notch. A bit more vibrant than a natural green, it’s dramatic and down-to-earth at the same time.
“When fall hits, I feel like I’m supposed to ditch the bright hues of summer and veer toward olive, mustard, charcoal and chocolate brown,” says HGTV.com managing editor Kayla. “I just can’t let go of my favorite warm-weather colors, though.” This rich plum is a perfect transitional shade into fall — it's deeper and moodier than the bright hues associated with summer, but still bold enough to make a splash in any room.
HGTV.com graphic designer Hannah pitched rich peacock blue. “It adds a touch of regal to high design or casual,” she says. Even a small dose of this saturated shade can seriously glam up a space — or, go all-in with bold peacock blue walls.
“I’m drooling over everything slate right now,” says HGTV.com assistant editor Chelsea. This versatile gray with a hint of blue looks great as a backdrop for brighter colors, or it can make a statement all on its own.
