Wallpaper Accent Wall and Wood Trim in Cottage-Style Kitchen

1900 Cottage-Style Kitchen with Wood Trim and Accent Wall

The kitchen of this 1900-era Victorian home was in desperate need of an upgrade. The homeowners wanted to keep the vintage feel of the home, so designers used wood trim and shutters to give the kitchen some of the charm of the rest of the house. To help maintain the classic feel of the home, an accent wall was created using wallpaper. The overall effect is reminiscent of cottage charm.

Spring is in full bloom, and I can't help but feel that it's the loveliest time of the year with soft greens speckling the trees and pastel blooms dotting the landscape.

Even on the dreariest of winter days, this kitchen by Austin, Texas, designer Sarah Stacey reminds me of the first signs of spring life with its mint-colored cabinetry and floral wallpaper.

When Sarah rendered potential designs for her clients to visualize the materials they were considering for the kitchen, she created one white kitchen and one with the soft green cabinetry, marble countertops and bold wallpaper pattern.

Updated Appliances in Traditional Cottage-Style Kitchen

The family wanted a space that blended vintage charm with the conveniences of modern appliances, so they chose traditional elements, such as the gold accents and wood trim, and added modern-day touches, like the stainless steel oven and a farmhouse sink. The end result is an overall cottage-style feel.

"Luckily (the client) chose green, which is what I was rooting for," Sarah says. "She was a fun client and definitely took design risks that paid off."

The choices work especially well for the home's Queen Anne architectural style. The homeowners wanted a kitchen with modern functionality, but they also wanted it to complement the Victorian elements of the home, such as dark wood trim.

Those elements were enhanced by choices of more traditional fixtures and features, like an apron-front sink, brass faucet and globe pendant lights. The removal of existing laminate flooring revealed beautiful long-leaf pine flooring.

Cottage Kitchen with Farmhouse Sink

The farmhouse sink in this green kitchen adds a unique element to the space but doesn't detract from the original charm of the house. This deep, white sink gives the homeowners plenty of space for prep and washing, and it helps keep the feel of the kitchen soft and inviting. The shutters just above the sink are a more traditional element of the home and help to block light in the evening or bring light into the space in the morning.

There's more to this kitchen design than it's beautiful finishes, though. Created for the owners of a steakhouse who love to cook at home, the kitchen had to be functional and large enough to accommodate larger groups.

Sarah accomplished that by removing a large pantry and built-in desk that impeded upon the kitchen's footprint. She replaced them with a wall of cabinetry and pull-out pantry that maintained needed storage space while creating more floor space in the kitchen.

The homeowners also gained wall ovens and a seat below a window that had been located inside the pantry.

"We used that to our advantage and added a window seat where the grandchildren could hang out while the adults sit around the island," Sarah says. "It added a lot more natural light to the space."

Green Cottage Kitchen with Corner Drawers

Even the cabinets in this space make the homeowners' lives easier. The corner drawers take advantage of wasted space in the kitchen by providing extra storage.

The existing cabinetry, which had been outfitted in the 1980s, offered minimum drawer space, so Sarah replaced lower cabinets with a ton of drawers to offer easy organization and prevent what she calls "the cabinet abyss."

Thanks for the peek into this charming kitchen, Stacey!
