8 Spaces Inspired by This Year's Oscar Nominees for Best Picture

We took all the Best Picture nominees and translated them into designer spaces. It was a tough task but someone had to do it.

With the 88th Academy Awards coming up, we've got movies on the brain, especially this year's Best Picture nominees. There's action, drama, romance and intrigue with the eight amazing films that got the official Oscar nod.

We're not sure which film will win, but while we wait for the awards to air, we decided to round up some design inspiration from each of them.

Blue Library With Transitional Style and Built-In Bookcases

Dark Blue Transitional Library With Built-In Bookcases

This transitional library uses a dark blue on the walls to give the space a moody ambiance. Built-in bookcases provide plenty of room for displaying well-loved tomes and knickknacks.

This light-filled, blue/gray space is a modern version of a stuffy and dark Wall Street law office. You still have traditional elements like built-in bookshelves and handsome leather armchairs, but they've mixed in some fun lamps, eclectic shelf decor and a lush, comfy sofa that's perfect for napping. Can't you picture Ryan Gosling curling up on the couch with a good book? Just me?

Eclectic, Red, White and Black Sitting Area

Eclectic, Red Sitting Room

Polished with tons of character and fun, this sitting room offers a unique style. Red walls with mirror accents set the stage for this creative space. The color story is spread to the floor by red and black chairs that accompany a zebra print rug. Large white vases flank a versatile dresser that provides storage and charm, making this room perfect for just about anything.

This moody spy thriller takes place in the midst of the Cold War. Red may be a dominant hue throughout the movie, but it's definitely not the easiest color to work with when it comes to design. When it's done well, though — WOW! That's exactly how I feel about this bold sitting room. The black-and-white accents and chic accessories really pull the space together so well. And the use of more of a cinnamon red really adds an element of sophistication.

Add touches of wool upholstery on accent pieces such as occasional chairs or stools. This counter stool is upholstered in tartan wool adorned with nickel nail heads.

Tartans and plaids always scream British Isles to me, so this lovely office corner feels like a great homage to the star of this moving film's Irish heritage. The best part of using patterns like this in your decor is that they can easily be mixed and matched successfully even if you feel like mixing fabrics is not your specialty! You can easily add some plaid to your space by using a blanket at the end of your bed or adding a throw to your sofa.

Industrial Basement With Blue Sofa, Pressboard Playhouse and Bar

Spacious Basement With Industrial Ceiling

A large couch with colorful pillows and blankets separates the game room and bar from the living room area in this newly finished basement. Pressboard and tin construct a fun and rugged playhouse for the kids in the corner.

It's difficult to know how things will really look post-Apocalypse. But I would be totally happy in this raw, industrial space. This is truly the stuff that "finished basement" dreams are made of. The open ceiling creates a loft-like feel, and the pressboard and tin elements bring a cool feature that looks completely intentional rather than unfinished. With a bar and a playhouse, there's a well-defined space for the entire family.

For me, movies like this remind me of when we first launched our space program back in the mid-twentieth century. And thankfully, mid-century modern design is trendier than ever right now. This space does a fantastic job of honoring that era's design aesthetic with traditional furniture pieces and lighting, but it also makes it feel fresh and modern with an updated fireplace treatment and eclectic art that adds a boho element.

Rustic Living Room With Vaulted Ceilings

Rustic Living Room With Vaulted Ceilings

With soaring ceilings, unexpected bursts of bright colors and soft, cozy textures, the living room of HGTV Dream Home 2014 blends everything there is to love about modern mountain living. Steel collar ties support the weight of the roof and, paired with glue-laminated wood beams, offer a striking visual element.

The Revenant is, admittedly, a bit of a heavier film. So it only felt right to lighten up the mood by letting its outdoor vibe inspire a fresh, modern cabin-style living space. The natural wood elements of the ceiling beams work seamlessly with the more contemporary features of the room. The yellow and gray accent colors are unexpected and add a perfect splash of color against the snowy background.

Renovated Entry Way with Custom Bench

As seen on Fixer Upper, Chip and Joanna opened up the entry hall and added a functional custom bench with handy storage compartments. The bench was designed by carpenter and furniture artisan Clint Harp.

This film certainly reminds me of the importance of love and family, which, to me, always brings to mind a home's welcoming foyer. This cheery space makes great use of every corner with storage, a built-in bench for seating and some fun pillows and artwork. A setup like this also allows you to easily change things up as you can swap in new pillows, artwork or decorations depending on the season or any upcoming holidays.

Contemporary Office With Sitting Area, Pendant Lights & Yellow Wall

Contemporary Office Features Elegant Pendant Lights, Conference Table And Sitting Area

A contemporary farmhouse inspired conference table provides ample sitting space for meetings or workspace to lay out that important project beneath elegant round copper pendant lights in this chic office. A yellow accent wall adds weight to the sitting room area.

While The Boston Globe's offices in 2001 were not quite as chic as this modern space, I think that those cramped conference rooms from back then have definitely inspired this more open and inclusive approach. While you might not need a space quite so large, there are ideas here you could use for a larger dining room or family room area; the row of copper pendant lights and contemporary chairs mixed with the rustic wood table are both standouts to me.
