5 Design Trends From NY Now to Try at Home

The design trade show always showcases the best of the best, and this year was no exception.

Twice a year the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in NYC is taken over by thousands of companies eager to display the best in home, lifestyle and gift products for the NY Now market show. The cavernous convention center is filled to the brim with booths showcasing each company's new and returning products for store owners and press alike to browse. And after spending the past few days traversing the show, I can tell you my calfs are burning and my fitness tracker is ready for a break, but mostly, I'm bursting at the seams with design inspiration.

More than 2,400 companies that presented this year were nothing short of amazing, and I could probably talk for hours about the stylish pieces I saw — and now dream of owning — but who has hours to spare? So instead, I thought I'd highlight five of the show's biggest tabletop and entertaining trends. Read on for a sneak peek of the styles that are sure to take 2017 by storm.

1: Nomadic Chic

Several companies were presenting worldly items that seemed inspired by travel and stylish destinations around the globe, like these beautiful baskets handcrafted in Africa.

2: Chic Ceramics

That's right — ceramics are back, and they've never been better. Tableware crafted out of simple ceramic materials were all the rage at NY Now, and they're the perfect pieces to mix with more intricate items.

3: Kitschy Cool

Looking for something unexpected and undeniably fun to update your tableware? This trend is definitely for you. Think napkins, towels and mugs adorned with kitschy, retro-inspired images and phrases.

4: New Nature

While nature-inspired tableware might not be new (items printed with banana leaf, cacti and pineapples have been big for a while now), this year there's a new way to bring nature to the table. Now, it's all about using actual nature in the products. The silver charger plate below, from Peetal New York, was cast from an actual lotus leaf, and the black tableware was made from Serpentine rock and clay.

5: Understated Glitz

Metallics have been the bees knees of tabletop design and entertaining for several years now, and 2017 is no different. But there's a twist to this year's take on the trend — the glitz is still there but much more subdued. Instead of in-your-face, fully gilded items, we can now expect to see just a hint of metallic sheen, making this fancy trend ready for everyday occassions.
