This hack is much easier than painting and affixing a backboard to a bookcase.

To decorate your newly colorful bookcase, use found objects for chic bookends. The geode and geometric trend is big so consider incorporating some of those design elements to bring your whole look up to date. And do like the designers do: place book spines away from you to give a cool, uniform look to your tomes.
