Materials Needed:

  • rough grit sandpaper
  • fine grit sandpaper
  • sanding block
  • 1 can non-oil-based spray primer
  • 1 quart paint for top color in high-gloss finish
  • 1 quart paint for bottom color in high-gloss finish
  • protective plastic covering
  • painter’s tape
  • HVLP paint sprayer
  • gloves

Apply Top Color

Using an HVLP paint sprayer, spray the top portion of the chair including the back and seat as well as any arms. Move back and forth approximately 8 inches from the surface of the chair in a steady sweeping motion to ensure an even coat. Allow approximately 1 hour for paint to thoroughly dry before adding a second and third coat. Tip: For a more graphic effect, consider using lighter colors on the top and dark colors on the bottom.

Apply Bottom Color

Once the back, seat and arms are completely dry, carefully cover the top portion of the chair and seat with plastic and painter’s tape. Using an HVLP paint sprayer, spray the bottom portion of the chair including the seat rest, legs and cross beams. Move back and forth approximately 8 inches from the surface of the chair in a steady sweeping motion to ensure an even coat. Allow approximately 1 hour for paint to thoroughly dry before adding a second and third coat. Once dry, remove the tape and plastic, then allow 24 hours for paint to cure before using chair.
